The demolition of a mobile home park has been delayed after thieves stole windows from mobile homes and caused potential asbestos contamination at the park. The thieves were targeting abandoned trailers, and caused the potential contamination by tearing out the windows.
The former Summers Mobile Home Park will now have to be inspected by environmental officials before any demolition can take place. The Pinellas Park City manager stated that experts can then remove any asbestos, and once they give the all clear contractors can move in and start the demolition work.
Apparently since the mobile home park was vacated a number of thieves have been targeting the empty homes, taking everything from windows to aluminium. In the latest incident around twenty-five or thirty doors and windows were taken from the homes, causing the threat of asbestos contamination.
Asbestos exposure can cause a range of health related problems, and this includes a form of cancer known as mesothelioma, for which there is currently no cure. Other health problems include respiratory problems and scarring of the lungs.
