A contractor hired to complete a road widening project will properly clean up and remove asbestos it left behind last year. The company will not be persecuted, since they responded to inquiries quickly and will complete the work immediately.
A contractor that completed a road-widening project in Florida will go back to the area to properly clean and remove asbestos it left behind. The company stated that the majority of the asbestos present on Alico Road was removed and disposed of properly. Most of the asbestos removed during the project was taken to the Okeechobee landfill, which is approved to receive sealed asbestos. The pieces of lump asbestos left behind will be sealed and removed as soon as the contractor can get final approval from the Department of Environmental Protection.
The asbestos on the site could pose a public health concern, since it is exposed to the elements. Asbestos can break down and become airborne if it is mishandled, making the chance of asbestos exposure higher. Asbestos can be inhaled into the lungs when it breaks apart, and the fibers can cause massive damage to the body. A type of lung cancer called mesothelioma has been linked to inhaling asbestos fibers. The DEP said that the site does not pose an immediate threat, but wants the contractor back as soon as possible.
