According to recent reports two UK companies have been fined for asbestos related violations. The two companies, located in Lancashire in the UK, were fined a total of twenty five thousand GBP, and also had to pay costs of nearly twelve thousand pounds after being found guilty of violating asbestos exposure laws and regulations.
The companies pleaded guilty at the Magistrates Court in Blackpool. Charges were brought against the company by the UK’s Health and Safety Executive after the company was accused of exposing employees to asbestos, which is a potentially deadly carcinogenic that can result in a form of cancer known as mesothelioma, as well as other health problems, through exposure to airborne asbestos dust and fibers.
The two companies involved in the action were In the Pink Leisure Ltd, and Eclipse Developments Ltd. A complaint was made about a nightclub site that was run by Pink Leisure, which was then investigated in 2005 by the Health and Safety Executive. According to HSE officials refurbishment resulted in significant levels of asbestos disturbance at the site.
One official added: 'Both companies had had previous advice in relation to asbestos on the site following a visit from HSE in January 2002, when a full survey was carried out and an amount of asbestos removed. The prosecution was taken because of this failure and the consequent exposure of up to a dozen employees working in the construction being exposed to asbestos containing materials.'
