Asbestos left in Block 7 of the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital has raised major concerns and has resulted in workers planning to down tools due to the potential dangers posed by the dangerous asbestos. Asbestos is a carcinogenic substance that is known to cause mesothelioma when ingested in high levels. Mesothelioma is a deadly cancer, which can affect the lungs, abdominal region, or heart.
Workers at the hospital, who have been working on renovations, have expressed concerns after being covered with asbestos dust and fibers whilst working on the renovations. Concerns were so high that the workers went to the Industrial Relations Commission regarding the asbestos exposure and presence. The Commission confirmed that workers had every right to be concerned for their health given the circumstances and situation.
Around one hundred and fifty workers were involved in the renovations, including plumbers, electricians, and painters. They have all refused to carry out any further work until risk assessments have been carried out and the area has been made safe for working in. Health and Safety inspectors have since been drafted in to assess the risks of exposure and to confirm whether or not the area is safe to work in.
