Asbestos Found in Holiday Toys

February 8th, 2008

Independent lab tests have found high levels of asbestos in a few toys released for the upcoming holiday season. The toys are now being tested to confirm the danger and, if the findings are supported, the toys will be pulled from stores.

After all the concerns of toys containing lead, a new danger has been found by a non-profit organization. A toy fingerprinting kit, as well as two brands of toy clay, has been found to contain dangerous levels of asbestos. Three labs hired by the Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization tested the toys, and two of the labs found high levels of asbestos in the toys. The manufacturers of the toys are now conducting their own tests to confirm the findings. If the independent tests confirm that high levels of asbestos are present in the toys, released for the upcoming holiday season, the items will be removed from stores.

The concern over asbestos in toys is understandable, since asbestos exposure has been linked to emphysema, mesothelioma and asbestosis. The diseases usually occur when asbestos is breathed into the lungs; the fingerprinting toy has powder in the kit that can become airborne. Other types of asbestos-related diseases can happen when asbestos is ingested, making the clay toys a concern.
