An Arizona demolition company, as well as the Department of Transportation, have been handed a $36,000 fine for mishandling asbestos. The violation is one of many against the Arizona DoT.
The Environmental Protection Agency slapped a $36,000 federal penalty against two companies this week to settle a suit alleging the illegal handling of asbestos. One of the companies charged is the Arizona Department of Transportation, and has to do with construction and demolition completed at a building in Pinal County, Arizona. This is the fourth asbestos enforcement action against the Arizona DoT in the past five years. The EPA indicated that the Department of Transportation has been repeatedly admonished for mishandling asbestos in the past.
The asbestos allegations state that the demolition company, as well as the DoT, blatantly ignored safety precautions to keep the public safe from asbestos exposure. Exposure to the substance has been linked to cases of respiratory illnesses including emphysema and mesothelioma. Mesothelioma is a form of lung cancer that stems from asbestos particles being inhaled into the lungs, keeping the tissue there from absorbing oxygen. The $36,000 fine is meant as a settlement for the allegations of the illegal removal of asbestos.
