The Board of Education in New Jersey is removing asbestos from an elementary school before the material becomes a problem. No complaints have been lodged and no danger is yet posed by the substance.
The Board of Education in New Jersey is not waiting until one school’s asbestos becomes a problem. After small amounts of safe asbestos were found throughout the building, the Board decided to remove the potentially dangerous substance before it became an issue. The asbestos found in three rooms is still in good repair, and is not posing a health threat since it is not falling apart. Asbestos is normally a concern only when it becomes old, or is disturbed when it can become airborne.
When asbestos becomes airborne, the particles can be inhaled and get caught in the body. Asbestos has been linked to respiratory diseases including emphysema and mesothelioma. Mesothelioma is a deadly form of lung cancer that is caused by asbestos particles becoming lodged in the lining of the lungs, keeping the tissue from absorbing oxygen. Many times, asbestos is not removed from a building until it is a danger due to the cost of the procedure. While the school board will be spending almost $30,000 for the abatement, officials consider it the best for everyone involved.
