Dr. Walter J Scott

Dr. Walter J. Scott is currently affiliated with the Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He specializes in cardiothoracic surgery, esophageal cancer, mediastinal tumors, video-assisted surgery for lung cancer, and thoracic cancer. Primarily, Dr. Scott focuses on early cancer diagnosis and treatment.

Dr. Scott earned his medical degree from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine, in 1981. He completed his residency in general surgery at the University of Chicago Medical Center. Following his residency, he completed two fellowships at the same institution, one performing research in cardiovascular physiology, and the other in cardiothoracic surgery.

Dr. Scott is board-certified in both general surgery and thoracic surgery.

He is also a member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the American College of Surgeons and the American Society of Clinical Oncology.

Dr. Scott utilizes tools such as PET scanning and video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) for the diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer. VATS is a minimally invasive form of surgery that is designed to remove cancerous tumors from the patient’s body. Dr. Scott was also one of the first surgeons to utilize the ultrasound bronchoscopy techniques for identifying malignant growths on lymph nodes in the chest. Robotic surgery is also available to remove tumors from the patient. Each of these tools is designed to be minimally invasive and decrease the patient's recovery time.

Clinical trials are an important aspect of developing new treatment strategies and diagnostic tools. Dr. Scott is active in tclinical research and has served as both the principal investigator and co-investigator on numerous clinical trials. Many of the trials are conducted internationally, as well as nationally. Because he is familiar with the latest developments in trials, he knows the latest techniques and treatments available to patients.

Dr. Scott has published widely in respected medical journals, as well as having authored a book for patients and their families. He is often asked to present his findings and to speak to colleagues on the topic of his research and clinical experiences.

The team approach to patient care, which is strongly emphasized at Fox Chase Cancer Center, is one of the qualities that drew Dr. Scott to that institution. He also believes in listening to each patient's wishes and helping them to develop a treatment plan that is custom tailored to their needs and desires.
