Dr. Tracey Weigel

Dr. Tracey Weigel earned her medical degree from the School of Medicine at the University of Rochester in 1986, and then went on to complete a residency in general surgery at Rhode Island’s Brown University. Dr. Weigel then accepted a fellowship at New York City’s Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, in surgical oncology. Following this fellowship, The University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics accepted her to a second fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery in Madison, Wisconsin.

Currently, Dr. Weigel serves as the Co-Director at the University of Wisconsin Comprehensive Cancer Center in the Multi-Disciplinary Lung and Esophageal Cancer Clinics. She also serves as a Professor at the University of Wisconsin in the Cardiothoracic Surgery Division. Additionally, Dr. Weigel was appointed Chief of Thoracic Surgery at the University of Wisconsin Hospital.

Dr. Weigel specializes in mesothelioma, esophageal, lung, thymic and other thoracic cancers. She treats her patients primarily through surgical procedures. Dr. Weigel has mastered her skill in thoracoscopic and laparoscopic surgical techniques. Currently, she primarily uses these techniques in lung and esophageal surgery. Minimally invasive surgical techniques are also in her repertoire of specializations.

Dr. Weigel is also a medical researcher, but her research efforts vary. Some of her current research involves improving minimally invasive surgical techniques in lung and esophageal cancers. She also researches the use of fluorescent endoscopic surveillance for cancers such as Barrett’s esophageal, dysplasia and lung cancer. Computed Tomography (CT), radiation and laparoscopic techniques are other areas that Dr. Weigel has explored during her research efforts to find treatments and diagnostic tools for lung and esophageal cancers.

Not only is Dr. Weigel involved in research efforts, but she also holds several memberships in professional organizations, including the Society of Thoracic Surgery; the American College of Surgeons; the American Association of Thoracic Surgeons; the Society of Surgical Oncology; the American Medical Association; and the Association of Women Surgeons

Dr. Weigel, who earned her certifications in the areas of surgical oncology, cardiothoracic surgery, and general surgery, has published several articles in leading medical journals such as the Journal of Thoracic Surgery, the American Journal of Surgery, and the Annals of Thoracic Surgery
