Dr. Thierry M Jahan

As the number of cases of mesothelioma—the rare asbestos-related cancer which usually strikes the pleura—have risen over the past several decades, many physicians have dedicated their careers to battling this fatal disease. One such physician is Dr. Thierry M. Jahan.

Dr. Jahan received his medical degree in 1997, from George Washington University in Washington, D.C. after first receiving an undergraduate degree in psychology from Columbia University. He then went to Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles for a residency and fellowship in internal medicine. Before becoming a faculty member at the University of California at San Francisco, Dr. Jahan also completed a fellowship at UCSF in hematology and oncology, from 1991-1994.

Currently, Dr. Jahan is an Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of California at San Francisco, and the Director of Clinical Services, Division of Hematology/Oncology, UCSF Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center.

A specialist in the treatment of mesothelioma, lung cancer, endocrine tumors and sarcoma, Dr. Jahan's research interests focus on malignant mesothelioma and lung cancer. He has received the Medical Housestaff Outstanding Teacher Award from the University of California at San Francisco at Mount Zion. In 2006, he received the First Annual Friend of the Palliative Care Service Award. Dr. Jahan was named by Castle Connolly as one of America's Top Doctors for 2008 and 2009 and one of America's Top Doctors for Cancer for 2007.

Dr. Jahan is a member of several medical professional societies, including the Association of Northern California Oncologists, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American College of Physicians and the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer. He is a Medical Advisory Board Member for The Bonnie J. Addario Lung Cancer Foundation. Dr. Jahan is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in medical oncology, internal medicine, and hematology.

The author and co-author of many papers, Dr. Jahan has written such titles as “Radical Pleurectomy/Decortication and Intraoperative Radiotherapy Followed by Conformal Radiation with or without Chemotherapy for Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma”; “Mechanisms of Potential Treatment Strategies for Metastatic Disease in Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer”; and “Small Cell Lung Cancer Clinical Practices in Oncology.”

Dr. Jahan's areas of expertise include mesothelioma, endocrine gland cancer, lung cancer, sarcoma, thyroid cancer, bone neoplasms, and soft tissue neoplasms. His specialty is internal medicine and his sub-specialties are medical oncology and hematology. He also has a research interest in novel agents in malignant mesothelioma and non-small cell lung cancer.

Currently, Dr. Jahan is involved in several active clinical studies which are investigating improved treatment methods for mesothelioma.
