Many researchers and physicians have chosen to make mesothelioma their main course of study. One such doctor is Stephen C. Yang, who is Chief of Thoracic Surgery; Director of Surgical Curriculum and Clerkship; and Surgical Director of the Thoracic Oncology Program, all at Johns Hopkins Hospital and Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland. He is also a Professor of Surgery and Oncology, and the Arthur B. and Patricia B. Modell Professor in Thoracic Surgery.
Dr. Yang is also an attending surgeon at both Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center and the Johns Hopkins Hospital.
Dr. Yang graduated from Duke University with a B.A. in chemistry and earned his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia. After completing his residency in general surgery at Houston's University of Texas Health Science Center, he returned to the Medical College of Virginia for a fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery. He also completed a three-year thoracic surgical oncology fellowship at the prestigious M. D. Anderson Cancer Center in Texas.
He is board-certified in general surgery as well as thoracic surgery, and is a faculty member of the College of Chest Physicians and the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Yang also holds membership in the International Association for Minimally Invasive Cardiothoracic Surgery. He has been named one of Castle Connolly's America's Top Doctors (2004-2009) and from 2005-2007 was listed as one of Castle Connolly's America's Top Doctors for Cancer. He was also awarded the Dean's Professor Award for Excellence in Teaching during 2008 by Johns Hopkins.
Dr. Yang's research interests include the development of biomarkers at the molecular level for early diagnosis of lung cancers and a study of the molecular biology of mesothelioma. His clinical interests include early detection of lung cancers including mesothelioma, and neoadjuvant therapy, which involves the use of preoperative chemotherapy and radiation therapy. He also has an interest in lung transplant surgery and lung volume reduction surgery for emphysema as well as robotic assisted thoracic surgery and geriatric surgery. His practice focuses on cancers such as mesothelioma and other thoracic cancers.
Over the course of his career, which spans more than two decades, Dr. Yang has written or co-authored a number of papers on cancer, and has also edited several texts, such as the Early Diagnosis and Treatment of Cancer series. He is the editor of Practical Reviews in Chest Medicine and was co-editor for Current Therapy in Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery.
