One thoracic surgeon who has chosen to focus on oncology, or the treatment of cancer, is Dr. Scott J. Swanson, the Director of Thoracic Oncology at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City. Mount Sinai is a well respected institution for its advancements in thoracic surgery, particularly in the area of minimally invasive surgery. It focuses on a multidisciplinary approach to difficult cancers. Dr. Swanson's specialty is thoracic surgery with a sub-specialty in cardiothoracic surgery.
Prior to his affiliation with Mount Sinai Medical Center, Dr. Swanson was the Chief Attending Surgical Officer at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. He was also a lecturer in surgery at Harvard Medical School and served as Thoracic Oncology Disease Center Leader for the Thoracic Oncology Program as well the Director of the Minimally Invasive Thoracic Surgery Program.
He earned his medical degree in 1985 from Harvard Medical School, after which he completed a residency in general surgery and a fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery at Brigham and Women's Hospital. He is board-certified in both surgery and thoracic surgery.
Dr. Swanson holds membership in several professional associations, including the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the General Thoracic Surgery Club, the American Association for Thoracic Surgery, the American College of Surgeons and the Cardiothoracic Surgery Network.
His clinical interests include esophageal cancer, thoracic oncology, sarcoma, lung cancer, thymoma, video assisted thoracic surgery and minimally invasive surgery. His research interests include novel treatments for lung disease, inclduing mesothelioma, and minimally invasive surgery.
Dr. Swanson was named one of America's Top Doctors for the years 2003 through 2009 and one of America's Top Doctors for Cancer from 2005 through 2007. He was also named one of Castle Connolly's Top Doctors: New York Metro Area for 2003 through 2008 and received the Patients' Choice Award in 2008.
