Patients diagnosed with an asbestos-related cancer, such as mesothelioma, must seek the assistance of a qualified physician. Since the disease is rare, finding a qualified oncologist may be slightly difficult. Recently, funds and resources have been allocated to assist patients who are faced with this diagnosis. Patients should not only seek an oncologist who has credentials, but also someone who is empathetic and can address the patient’s emotional needs. Because of the nature of the disease, patients will experience a range of emotions. The patient should feel comfortable with the oncologist personally and professionally, in order to promote a healing environment for the patient.

Image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT) and intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) are two important techniques used to detect cancer tumors in patients diagnosed with mesothelioma. Each technique allows the oncologist to locate the cancerous lesion and eliminate the tumor with radiation waves. The more advanced the imaging technology, the more accurately the radiation oncologist can target the particular tumor. Dr. Decker specializes in each technique. He also conducts research in the area of thoracic oncology, neck cancer, brain cancer and prostate cancer.
