For most patients, the initial diagnosis of mesothelioma—a cancer that affects the membranes lining the body cavities—is made by the patient's personal physician. He or she may not be able to keep abreast of current treatment plans, or the latest drugs for treatment of mesothelioma. The patient is often advised to seek treatment from an oncologist who has chosen to specialize in mesothelioma.

Fortunately, there are many physicians who have taken up the battle against this devastating, fatal disease. Some have chosen to focus on research, seeking ways to attack the cancer on the molecular or genetic level. Others research new medications or better methods of early detection. You will also find that there are physicians who use what they learn in their research projects to improve the care of the patients they see daily in their practice.

Dr. Robert N. Taub is a physician who belongs in the latter classification. Dr. Taub, with nearly five decades as a practicing physician, is a Professor of Clinical Medicine and Attending Oncologist at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, New York Presbyterian Hospital. He is also the director of the Connective Tissue Oncology Program at the Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center. He has also been an Associate in Medicine and Hematology and an Assistant Professor of Medicine, as well as Director of the Transplantation Immunology Laboratory at Mount Sinai Hospital School of Medicine.

He held various positions at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond, including Associate Director of Clinical Affairs, Professor of Internal Medicine and Microbiology, Division Chair for Medical Oncology, and Chief Attending Oncologist. While at Columbia University Comprehensive Cancer Center, he was the Deputy Director for Cancer Control, Deputy Director for Clinical Research and Patient Care, and the Director of Inpatient Medical Oncology Unit.

Dr. Taub received his medical degree from Yale University and served his internship in medical service at the New England Medical Center Hospital in Boston. Returning to Yale, he served an internship and research fellowship in pathology. Two more fellowships, one in hematology at the New England Medical Center and one in immunology at England's National Institute for Medical Research, followed. He also completed a doctorate in zoology at London University.

Dr. Taub is board-certified in four different specialties: oncology, hematology, internal medicine, and clinical immunology. He is a member of numerous profession organizations, including the American Society for Clinical Oncology and the American Association for Cancer Research. In the past, he also served as the Director-at-Large of the Virginia Division of the American Cancer Society. As an author or co-author, Dr. Taub has produced many professional papers covering a wide variety of subjects. One of these is an article pertaining to the use of chemotherapy to treat malignant mesothelioma.

Dr Taub is affiliated with two New York City hospitals: New York Presbyterian-Columbia, located at 630 West 168th Street, and New York Presbyterian/Weill Cornell, located at 525 East 68th Street.
