Dr. Robert B. Cameron is currently the Director of Thoracic Oncology for the Department of Surgery at UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles. He is also the Chief of General Thoracic Surgery at Wadsworth Veterans Administration Hospital, which is also in Los Angeles, and an Assistant Professor of Surgery, Cardiothoracic Surgery and Surgical Oncology at the UCLA School of Medicine.

Dr. Cameron graduated from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor in 1984. He went on to perform an internship and residency at UCLA, where he would later become a Chief Resident in General Surgery, from 1989-1992. At one time he was a surgical oncology clinical associate at the National Cancer Institute (NCI). He finished his fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery at New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center/Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York.

One of Dr. Cameron’s main areas of interest is in the treatment of mesothelioma. His role as a member of the Scientific Advisory Board for the Pacific Heart, Lung, and Blood institute has allowed him to be a part of innovative research intended to help prolong the lives of patients with mesothelioma. This research involves programs that apply immunotherapy as well as look into ways by which to improve the chances of early detection and prevention of mesothelioma.

Dr. Cameron has written two papers discussing topics like “rational versus radical” treatments for mesothelioma and improving survival rates based on these radical treatments. He consulted with a mesothelioma expert from Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston regarding the advantages and disadvantages of a combination treatment that begins with chemotherapy, followed up by surgery, involving the removal of the infected lung, and winding up with radiation therapy. Dr. Cameron came to the conclusion that each case should be evaluated individually before this tri-modal approach to therapy is decided upon.

Besides mesothelioma, Dr. Cameron’s other areas of interest for clinical research are thoracic oncology, surgery for the reduction of lung volume, management of pain for diseases of the thoracic cavity, and cancer and immunotherapy. He also has done research in the field of video-assisted thoracic surgery.

Dr. Cameron holds many memberships in professional organizations such as the American Medical Association (AMA) and the American Association of Immunologists (AAI). He is a former member of the UCSF Thoracic Oncology Group and is currently the Chairman of the UCLA-Johnson Comprehensive Cancer Center Thoracic Tumor Board.
