Dr. Paul Mansfield is a leading researcher, oncologist and surgeon at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, University of Texas, in Houston. His distinguished career began after the doctor graduated from Jefferson Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia, PA. Following his internship and residency in Philadelphia, at Pennsylvania Hospital, Dr. Mansfield moved to Texas and M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. He was a surgical and a clinical oncology research fellow at that hospital and is certified by the American Board of Surgery.

Dr. Mansfield is the recipient of many honors, including the hospital’s “Patients’ Choice Award” in 2008, and being named in 2009 to both the “Top Doctors in Texas” and “America’s Top Doctors” lists. A caring physician, Dr. Mansfield has received awards for his bedside manner, in addition to other awards for his research and medical expertise. He is a member of top professional organizations, including the American College of Surgeons and the American Society of Clinical Oncology.

The doctor is part of the surgical team at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, a facility that is world famous for its contributions to improving cancer treatment and advancing cancer research. As one of the three original National Cancer Institute Comprehensive Cancer Centers, this hospital has been ranked #1 by the U.S. News & World Reports survey as one of “American’s Best Hospitals” in six of the past nine years. Researchers at this hospital have been awarded the greatest number of grants and have conducted the most clinical trials on new cancer therapies than researchers at any other institution.

Within the Surgical Oncology Division, Dr. Mansfield specializes in the treatment of gastrointestinal cancer and in the treatment of rare forms of mucinous tumors of the appendix. These are unusual cancers that fill up the abdominal cavity with a substance so gelatinous that it causes obstruction of the bowel and subsequent death. Dr. Mansfield treats skin cancer patients and has special interest in other cancers of the peritoneum, such as peritoneal mesothelioma.

An expert in his field of researching rare cancers, Dr. Mansfield is in demand as a guest speaker for conferences and symposiums on the regional and national levels. He joins his colleagues as co-author for numerous articles and papers in peer-reviewed national journals.

The work Dr. Mansfield conducts with regard to clinical trials is extremely important. Due to the rarity of the cancer types he studies, even finding enough patients to participate in a clinical trial is sometimes a challenge. Doctors at M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, including Dr. Paul Mansfield, meet that challenge consistently in their efforts to push forward new knowledge about those rare cancers and new treatment methods.
