Malignant mesothelioma was once such a rare disease that many in the medical community wondered whether it was actually a separate form of cancer or merely an occasional mutation of another type. By the 1950s, however, the cases had increased so dramatically that most of the previous schools of thought were discarded. The link between exposure to asbestos and mesothelioma was firmly established, and physicians began to respond to this new threat.

Because the treatments of the day that were used to combat other forms of cancer were ineffective against mesothelioma, new methods were developed. Better ways of delivering radiation therapy, new drugs, and new surgical techniques were found that produced better results. Research projects were launched to help gain an understanding of the biology and pathology of the disease. Building on this, much current research has focused on the molecular structure and genetic composition of mesothelioma.

For more than half a century, Dr. Michael Kashgarian has been on the front line in treating and researching diseases such as mesothelioma. Dr. Kashgarian is a Professor Emeritus of Pathology and Senior Research Scientist at the Yale University School of Medicine's Department of Pathology in New Haven, Connecticut. As a professor of pathology, he has devoted much of his time to tissue and organ diseases, such as mesothelioma, unknown primary cancers, and transplantation.

He received his undergraduate degree in chemistry from New York University in 1954 and his medical degree from Yale University School of Medicine in 1958. He completed residencies in medicine at Barnes Hospital, St. Louis and in pathology at Yale University School of Medicine. A fellowship was completed at the University of Gottingen in Germany, followed by another in Laboratory Medicine at Yale-New Haven Hospital. He is board certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology and Medicolegal Pathology.

Dr. Kashgarian's primary areas of expertise include confocal microscopy, diagnostic electron microscopy, renal pathology, ischemic cell injury, transport ATPases, heat shock proteins, advanced imaging techniques, genetic pathology, mechanisms of glomerular sclerosis, vital microscopy, and image analysis. His research lab focuses on three primary areas of investigation. These are the characteristics of transporting epithelia, the mechanisms involved in recovery from acute renal failure, and the factors involved in the initiation and progression of glomerulus scarring by defining the pathogenetically relevant parameters of progressive glomerular injury. He also has a clinical interest in cellular disruption and restitution, juvenile diabetes, renal transport and ischemia, heat shock proteins, diabetic nephropathy, and electron microscopy. He also has an interest in the pathology of mesothelioma.

He is a member of numerous professional organizations, including the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Physiological Society, the International Society of Nephrology, the American Medical Association, and the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology. He has served as president of the Renal Pathology Society, been on the advisory council for the American Society of Clinical Pathologists, and served on the board of directors for the Connecticut Society of Pathologists' Task Force on Environmental, Toxic, and Occupational Diseases.

Widely published, Dr. Kashgarian has authored or co-authored papers such as The Contribution of Quantitative Techniques including Morphometry to Renal Diagnosis, Functional Correlates of Compensatory Renal Hypertrophy, Differential Inhibition of HSP72 and HSP25 Produces Profound Impairment of Cellular Integrity, and Depletion of B Cells in Murine Lupus: Efficacy and Resistance.

Dr. Kashgarian's hospital affiliations are with the Yale University School of Medicine in New Haven, Bridgeport Hospital in Bridgeport, and the VA Connecticut Health Care System, in West Haven.

Meta: Dr. Michael Kashgarian has over 50 years experience working with the asbestos cancer mesothelioma. He is affiliated with three health care systems in Connecticut, including Yale University School of Medicine, Bridgeport Hospital, and the VA Connecticut Health Care System.
