Dr. Matthew Schuchert is a highly rated cancer specialist, researcher, thoracic surgeon and author. He is an expert in the field of respiratory system cancers, including mesothelioma. He is affiliated with 12 hospitals and is the author of 30 medical publications. The hospitals are closely linked with the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute, which is a designated National Cancer Institute (NCI) Comprehensive Care Cancer Center.

One of the prestigious hospitals with which Dr. Schuchert is associated with is the UPMC Passavant Cranberry hospital. This is an $8 billion integrated global health enterprise facility. It is one of the best non-profit organizations in the world for research.

Dr. Schuchert is a member of many professional associations, including the American Medical Association, the American Board of Surgery and the American College of Surgeons. He has been included in many professional journals as a guest reviewer.

Dr. Schuchert has authored many books on the topic of mesothelioma and is considered by peers to be an expert and leader. He has penned journal articles and chapters about specialized surgical methods. He is an Assistant Professor at the University of Pittsburgh. His teaching is conducted at the Heart, Lung, and Esophageal Surgery Institute at the University Medical Center.

A graduate of Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, Dr. Schuchert previously received his Bachelor of Science from Yale University. Following graduation from Johns Hopkins, the doctor continued serving at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) as a surgery intern and later as a junior resident in surgery.

While at UPMC, he earned his research fellowship in surgery. When that was completed, Dr. Schuchert stayed at UPMC to become a senior surgical resident and chief resident in surgery. Other accomplishments at UMPC included becoming a fellow in minimally invasive thoracic and foregut surgery. He was also a cardiothoracic surgery resident until 2005.

Dr. Matthew Schuchert was well trained in research while at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. This school is ranked by U.S. News & World Report at #2 of 144 schools for research quality. In his research, the doctor and his staff focus on studying T-cell and dendritic cell subsets. The research is investigating the roles of these cells in transplantation tolerance and their use for anti-tumor immunity.

The current goal of his research is targeted towards understanding how immune status might influence the outcome in lung cancers. This would have particular interest to those who have developed lung cancers like mesothelioma. Other areas of Dr. Schubert’s work in research are in cancer treatment. Besides performing standard surgery, he is an expert in alternatives such as radiofrequency ablation and CyberKnife. In addition to research on lung cancers, Dr. Schuchert is researching blood cancer microbiology and new therapies for treating cancer.
