Approximately 250 new cases of asbestos-related disease are diagnosed every year in California. While the diagnosis of a life-threatening disease is always a serious matter for every patient and physician, in the case of asbestosis and mesothelioma victims it is particularly difficult because both diagnosis and treatment require highly specialized medical knowledge and skill sets. How will you be able to find a doctor you can trust? Fortunately, California is home to some of the nation’s finest treatment centers and doctors.

Dr. Mark W. Lischner is a critical care pulmonologist who has been working in the Sacramento area for the last 40 years. A pulmonologist, or pulmonary medicine specialist, is an internal medicine physician who has undergone additional training in lung pathologies. Dr. Lischner’s areas of expertise within his specialty include the treatment of asthma, interstitial fibrosis, asbestosis and sarcoidosis, a chronic inflammatory disease that often affects the lungs and from which Dr. Lischner personally suffers.

Dr. Lischner was born in Connecticut, and received his undergraduate degree from Wesleyan University in Middletown in 1960. He received his medical training at the Yale University School of Medicine in New Haven, Connecticut, graduating in 1965, and did his internship and residency in internal medicine at the Grady Memorial and Emory University Hospitals in Atlanta, Georgia. Afterwards he completed his pulmonary disease fellowship at the prestigious Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City in 1969.

Dr. Lischner also served for two years as the pulmonary specialist at the Navy Hospital in San Diego between 1969 and 1971. During this time he did a two-month stint as a pulmonary specialist upon the hospital ship USS Repose in Vietnam.

After his military service was completed, Dr. Lischner moved to Sacramento and began private practice. His primary affiliation is with the Sutter Physician Alliance, a network consisting of three professional practice organizations in the Sacramento suburb of Roseville. Dr. Lischner also maintains professional relationships with the Sutter Roseville Medical Center, Mercy San Juan Hospital, Mercy Folsom Hospital, and Kindred.

Dr. Lischner is active in many professional organizations, including the American Thoracic Society, the American College of Physicians, the American College of Chest Physicians, the California Thoracic Society, and the California Medical Association. He has board certifications from both the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Pulmonary Diseases. In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Lischner also contributes frequently to research papers and studies.
