Dr. Larry R. Kaiser specializes in thoracic surgery and the treatment of malignant mesothelioma, lung cancer and mediastinal tumors. Dr. Kaiser graduated with a medical degree from Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1977. From 1977 to 1983, he attended the University of California in Los Angeles (UCLA) to complete his general surgery residency. Following his residency, Dr. Kaiser completed a fellowship in surgical oncology at UCLA and later completed his cardiovascular surgery residency at the University of Toronto in Ontario, Canada in 1984. In 1985, Dr. Kaiser also completed his thoracic surgery senior residency.
After his residency at the University of Toronto, Dr. Kaiser became a surgeon at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) in New York, NY in 1985. Dr. Kaiser served as a faculty member at the St. Louis Washington University School of Medicine for three years. In 1991, he was appointed as a faculty member at University of Pennsylvania Hospital. The University of Pennsylvania named Dr. Kaiser the Chairman of the Department of Surgery in 2001. He also serves as the Surgeon-in-Chief and a John Rhea Barton Professor.
Dr. Kaiser is recognized in his field for exhibiting service in the field of thoracic surgery. He is also a fellow of the American Surgical Association, American College of Surgeons, American Association for Thoracic Surgery, Society of Clinical Surgery, the Halsted Society, the Fleischner Society, and the Society of University Surgeons. In 2005, the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies of Science selected Dr. Kaiser as one of their prestigious members. He also serves on the board of the medical journals Contemporary Surgery, Annals of Surgery, Annals of Surgical Oncology, ACS Surgery, and the Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery.
Dr. Kaiser has published nine books and over 300 other publications. Although he wrote many of them alone, some were also a collaborative effort with his colleagues. He is a member of several associations, including: American Association for Thoracic Surgery (AATS), Cardiothoracic Surgery Network (CSN), the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) and General Thoracic Surgical Club (GTSC).
At the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Kaiser served as a Principal Investigator for a National Emphysema Treatment Trial (NETT). This procedure evaluated end-stage emphysema patients after surgery to measure lung volume reduction. The research was a part of a grant from the University of Pennsylvania Health System. In addition to serving as a Principal Investigator, he serves on the Executive Committee of the NETT trial. He also manages the Thoracic Oncology Research Laboratory at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital.
Dr. Kaiser’s areas of specialization include malignant mesothelioma, lung cancer and mediastinal tumors. He has conducted a significant amount of research in the area of mesothelioma. Most of his efforts at the Thoracic Oncology Research Lab are dedicated to this particular area of research. His research efforts have led to several patents, including instruments used during surgical procedures. Additionally, he is one of the fore founders of a unique video thoracoscopy procedure.
