Joseph S Friedberg, M.D.

Acclaimed for his special interest and notable discoveries in research on malignant mesothelioma, Joseph S. Friedberg, M.D. currently serves as the Chief of Thoracic Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania Presbyterian Medical Center. He holds a faculty appointment as Associate Professor of Surgery at four facilities within the University of Pennsylvania Health System. He has been an esteemed professor of surgery and attending thoracic surgeon for over two decades in the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania area. Dr. Friedberg is board-certified in general surgery as well as thoracic surgery.

Dr. Friedberg completed his medical training at Harvard Medical School, obtaining his M.D. degree in 1986. He completed an internship in surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts the following year. In 1988, he finished an otolaryngology residency at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary. He then completed a residency in general surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital. From 1994 through 1996, he fulfilled a fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston.

Dr. Friedberg enjoys membership in a variety of national and international societies in his field, including the American Association of Thoracic Surgeons, the American Thoracic Society, the American College of Surgeons, the American College of Chest Physicians, and the American Society of Clinical Oncology. He has been consistently selected for inclusion on Philadelphia Magazine’s annual list of top local doctors, appearing in 2005, 2006 and 2007.

Dr. Friedberg’s research centers on diseases involving the pleura, the lining membrane of the lungs. In addition to leading the Pennsylvania Presbyterian Thoracic Research Laboratory, he has personally conducted a variety of clinical trials targeting malignant mesothelioma and other advanced cancers, including efforts toward the formulation of a vaccine for lung cancer. He has wide-ranging experience in photodynamic therapy, tagging cancerous tissue with photosensitizing chemicals to make it selectively sensitive to laser treatment, as well as video-thoracoscopy and other procedures that are minimally invasive.

Dr. Friedberg’s research philosophy is directed toward the development of innovative technology that has great relevance to patient care. He specifically targets diseases for which no current solution is available. The goal of his research team is to produce discoveries that translate into meaningful advances in clinical treatment within three to five years.

Dr. Friedberg has published many peer-reviewed articles in a variety of specialized journals, including Radiology, Seminars in Thoracic Cardiovascular Surgery, Advances in Experimental Medical Biology, Critical Care Medicine, and Chest. He has also authored many textbook chapters for medical volumes, written a variety of editorials, and has spoken at many national and international seminars and meetings.
