Dr. Jeanne M. Lukanich specializes in the treatment of mesothelioma, among other things. In 1987, Dr. Lukanich earned her medical degree from Johns Hopkins University. After completing her medical degree, she completed residencies at a variety of hospitals in North America:
After completing her residencies in 1996, she served as a clinical fellow at Harvard University’s Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, MA, for thoracic surgery. During this year, she was appointed Instructor of Surgery for Harvard Medical School. In 1997, she became board-certified in cardiothoracic surgery. Prior to this certification, she was also certified in general surgery and cardiac life support.
Dr. Lukanich currently practices at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Boston VA Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts. Her practice covers an entire range of thoracic cancer diseases. As a thoracic surgeon, she performs lung transplants, multimodality treatments, and follow-up treatments. As a promoter of multimodality treatments for mesothelioma, she incorporates extrapleural pneumonectomy with chemotherapy and radiation treatments.
Dr. Lukanich is currently advocating more research in the area of locoregional control for patients diagnosed with mesothelioma. Her expertise and interests also extend to managing post-surgical complications. Dr. Lukanich aims to improve the prognosis of mesothelioma patients through biopsies and accurate diagnosis.
Dr. Lukanich has also begun a program at the Boston VA Hospitals that provides comprehensive thoracic surgical treatments. After the program’s inception, the number of thoracic surgeries tripled at the West Roxbury and Jamaica Plain VA Hospitals. Consequently, a defunct thoracic surgery clinic was revived through her efforts. In addition to her contributions on this project, she also promoted the use of multimodality cancer treatments in the thoracic care unit.
As a thoracic surgery instructor at Harvard Medical School, she teaches her fellows the proper procedure for harvesting organs and for transplant operations. Her research interests also include minimally invasive surgical techniques for thoracic surgery and esophageal diseases. Dr. Lukanich holds a number of memberships, as well. She is currently a member of Women in Thoracic Surgery (WTS), the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS), and the Cardiothoracic Surgery Network (CSN).
