Dr. Harvey I Pass

Dr. Harvey I. Pass is a renowned oncologist and thoracic specialist, who has devoted most of his career of over three decades to the fight against mesothelioma. Dr. Pass is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Johns Hopkins University, and received his medical degree from Duke University Medical School in 1973. An internship and residency in surgery followed at the Duke University Medical Center. He completed his cardiothoracic training at the Medical University of South Carolina, serving a year as an attending physician in the department of cardiathoracic surgery. Thereafter, Dr. Pass completed a senior fellowship with the National Cancer Institute's Thoracic Oncology Section Surgery Branch, from 1983 to 1986. He is board-certified in thoracic surgery.

He was named Head of Thoracic Oncology for the National Cancer Institute in 1986, a position he held for 10 years. During this time, he investigated the use of intraoperative photodynamic therapy for treating pleural mesothelioma, and the use of adjuvant immunochemotherapy after mesothelioma surgery. He collaborated with Dr. Renato Baserga to investigate the role of insulin growth factor receptor in mesothelioma and, along with Dr. Michele Carbone, discovered simian virus 40 in human mesothelioma.

In 1996, Dr. Pass relocated to Wayne State University, in order to help build the thoracic oncology program at Karmanos Cancer Institute. During his nine-year tenure there, he continued his research into cancer and mesothelioma, and also helped found the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation. He was recruited in 2005 to become the first Director of the New York University Division of Thoracic Surgery, a position he holds today. Dr. Pass's research lab is located at Bellevue Hospital, and is currently focused on the Early Detection Research Network Biomarker Discovery Laboratory for Mesothelioma and the Clinical Core for the National Cancer Institute's Mesothelioma Pathogenesis Program Project.

He is an Ad Hoc reviewer for such publications as the New England Journal of Medicine, the Journal of Clinical Oncology, and the International Journal of Cancer. He has authored numerous articles for these and other journals, as well. He has edited several books, including Malignant Mesothelioma: Advances in Pathogenesis, Diagnosis, and Translational Therapies and 100 Questions & Answers about Mesothelioma.Dr. Pass has been a member of the editorial board for Clinical Cancer Research.

In addition to serving as Chairman of the Scientific Advisory Board for the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation, and as a member of the Lung Cancer Alliance Board, Dr. Pass has campaigned tirelessly for mesothelioma research funding and wider collaborative efforts, as well as for a national ban on asbestos.

He has been named one of Castle Connolly's Top Doctors for the years 2002-2009, America's Top Doctors for Cancer from 2005-2007, and was the recipient of Detroit's Top Doctors award in 2004 and 2005, and the New York Metro Area Top Doctors award in 2007-2009.
