Contact Information

Mesothelioma is a rare, and extremely aggressive, form of cancer that usually occurs in the lining of the chest cavity and the membrane surrounding the lungs. One physician, who for more than 30 years has devoted his career to the study of all types of cancers, including mesothelioma, is Dr. H. (Henry) Ian Robins.

Dr. Robins earned his medical degree at Boston University, and then completed his internship and residency at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics. A fellowship at the University of Wisconsin's Comprehensive Cancer Center followed.

Dr. Robins is board-certified in both internal medicine and medical oncology and is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology. He is a Professor of Medicine at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine in Madison and a staff member of the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics.

His clinical interests include malignant mesothelioma, systemic hyperthermia, breast cancer, sarcomas, clinical hypnosis, low grade lymphomas, and neuro-oncology. He has published approximately 150 professional articles as either author or co-author, including “Recurrent Malignant Glioma Treated with Radiosurgery,” “Role of TNFa in Hyperthermia Induced Apoptosis of Human Leukemia Cells,” “Validity of Datasets Questioned in Gliadel Study,” and “Whole Body Hyperthermia Induction of Soluble Tumor Necrosis Factor Receptors: Implications for Rheumatoid Diseases.”

Dr. Robins lists his areas of special expertise as brain tumors, malignant cancer and malignant fibrous cancer, breast cancer, experimental leukemia, cancer of the central nervous system, and carcinoma. He also pioneered a safe method to use systemic hyperthermia for the treatment of cancer. This method involves using radiant heat technology to warm patients and is normally used in conjunction with immunotherapy and radiation therapy.

He is chairman of the Systemic Hypothermia Oncological working group, which is an international organization conducting clinical trials. He has also worked on developing protocols for neuro-oncology and he is the principal investigator in the Radiation Therapy Oncology group, the Eastern Cooperative Oncology group, and the North American Brain Tumor Consortium.

Dr. Robins's primary hospital affiliation is the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics.
