Dr. Gregory P. Kalemkerian practices medicine in the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Michigan Health Care System. He is the Co-Director of the Thoracic Oncology Program, which studies and treats lung cancer, esophageal cancer, and mesothelioma—the cancer of the lungs’ outer lining, which is caused by exposure to asbestos materials.

Dr. Kalemkerian also acts as a Clinical Associate Professor in the University’s Department of Internal Medicine and is a Cancer Center Member. His professional interests involve research into experimental treatments of mesothelioma and lung cancer.

Dr. Kalemkerian studied at Northwestern University in Chicago, and received his medical degree from Northwestern in 1985. He remained there to complete his residency in 1989. From 1989 to 1992 he worked on, and then completed, his Fellowship in Medical Oncology at Johns Hopkins University. He became board-certified in medical oncology in 1991. For six years beginning in 1993, Dr. Kalemkerian participated in the lung cancer program at Wayne State University’s Karmanos Cancer Institute as a physician-scientist. When he left Wayne State, he took over that same position at the University of Michigan Health Care System.

As a clinician, Dr. Kalemkerian focuses on lung cancer, mesothelioma, and thymoma. He is the coordinator for the Multidisciplinary Lung Cancer Clinic at the University of Michigan, as well as its lung cancer research program. Dr. Kalemkerian has pulled together some of the best specialists from medical and radiation oncology, thoracic surgery, pulmonary medicine, nuclear medicine and pathology for this team. His team evaluates patients who have already been diagnosed with lung tumors of any type, or who are suspected to have lung tumors, in a coordinated effort to form quick and accurate diagnoses and staging of the cancer.

Besides diagnosing and staging lung tumors, the Lung Cancer Clinic conducts research on experimental therapies for lung cancer and mesothelioma. Through the Lung Cancer Clinic, Dr. Kalemkerian also studies the epidemiology of cancer; that is, how race, age, gender, and treatment effect the patient’s prognosis.

Dr. Kalemkerian belongs to the Southwest Oncology Group and is also a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology. He has authored a number of articles, on all varieties of lung cancer, mesothelioma, their diagnosis and treatment, that have been published in peer-reviewed publications.

Dr. Kalemkerian can be reached through the University of Michigan Health System.
