Dr. Frank C Detterbeck

Many thoracic surgeons, who specialize in surgeries in the chest area, are also well-versed in the treatment of a rare type of cancer, caused primarily by asbestos exposure, called pleural mesothelioma.

One of these thoracic surgeons is Dr. Frank C. Detterbeck. Dr. Detterbeck is affiliated with Yale University Medical School in New Haven, Connecticut, where he is a Professor of Surgery, Chief of Thoracic Surgery, Surgical Director of Thoracic Oncology, and the Associate Director of Clinical Affairs at Yale Cancer Center.

Dr. Detterbeck completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, and received his medical degree in 1983 from Northwestern University. He was a resident and then chief resident in surgery at Virginia Mason Clinic in Seattle, then completed residencies in thoracic surgery at the University of North Carolina before completing a fellowship in transplant surgery at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill.

He is board certified in general surgery, thoracic surgery and cardiac surgery and is a member of both the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the American Association for Thoracic Surgery. Dr. Detterbeck is also a member of the Cardiothoracic Surgery Network, the General Thoracic Surgical Club, the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the European Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the International Society for Minimally Invasive Cardiothoracic Surgery, and the Southern Thoracic Surgical Association. He has appeared on the Castle Connolly America's Top Doctors list in 2007, America's Top Doctors for Cancer from 2005 through 2007, and Top Doctors in New York Metro Area for 2007.

Dr. Detterbeck has special expertise in adjuvant chemotherapy, thoracoscopy, pneumonectomy, lung transplantation, lung lobectomy, and mediastinoscopy. He is also experienced with cancer of the esophagus, bronchiolitis obliterans, cystic fibrosis,gastrointestinal cancer, lymphatic metastasis, and local neoplasm recurrence.

He lists his clinical interests as including all areas of thoracic oncology, such as mesothelioma, lung cancer and metastases, thymoma, chest wall tumors, sarcoma, esophageal cancer, Pancoast tumors, and mediastinal tumors. He also has an interest in chest surgery for benign conditions, and favors minimally invasive surgery for thoracic procedures.

Dr. Detterbeck has also performed extensive research. His projects have included cancer imaging techniques, multi-modal methods of cancer treatment, prognostic markers to enable early detection of difficult-to-diagnose cancers such as mesothelioma, and cancer biology.

He has published nearly 100 articles on various topics, including all varieties of lung cancer, and his work has been seen in major medical journals.

Dr. Detterbeck will accept appointments from either patients or their physicians. He is affiliated with the Yale-New Haven Hospital.
