The University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute is widely recognized as one of the foremost treatment centers in the United States, treating some 30,000 patients a year and offering diagnosis and therapy for all types of adult cancer, including mesothelioma. Dr. David L. Bartlett is the director of the David C. Koch Regional Perfusion Cancer Therapy Center there, as well as Chief of the Division of Surgical Oncology at the University of Pittsburgh Department of Surgery.

Dr. Bartlett is a surgeon whose specific clinical interests lie in the management of advanced abdominal malignancies, including malignant peritoneal mesothelioma. Dr. Bartlett helped pioneer a groundbreaking technique called chemoperfusion, which delivers chemotherapy directly to a patient’s peritoneal cavity as a recirculating perfusion, while the patient himself is kept in a closely monitored, clinical hyperthermia. This technique allows chemotherapy to be administered in the operating room to patients whose disease is confined to the peritoneal cavity.

Dr. Bartlett was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan. In 1983, he received his undergraduate degree from Rice University in Houston, Texas. Between 1983 and 1987, Dr. Bartlett attended the University of Texas Medical School, where he was a recipient of the prestigious Sansoz Award for Academic Achievement and excellence among surgical students. Between 1987 and 1993, he pursued his internship and surgical residency at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, afterwards completing a Surgical Oncology Fellowship at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City, between 1993 and 1995. During his time at Memorial Sloan-Kettering, he received an American Cancer Society Award as a Clinical Oncology Fellow.

In 1995, Dr. Bartlett served as a special expert at the National Cancer Institute surgery branch, advancing to the position of senior investigator in late 1996. He continued at the National Cancer Institute until 2001, when he accepted an appointment as visiting Associate Professor and Chief of the Division of Surgical Oncology at the University of Pittsburgh Department of Surgery. In 2005, Dr. Bartlett became a full Professor.

Dr. Bartlett is active in many professional organizations, including the Society of Surgical Oncology, the American Association for Cancer Research, the American Society of Clinical Oncologists, and the American Society of Gene Therapy. In addition to his teaching responsibilities, he maintains an active surgical practice. His treatment regimens for patients suffering from malignant peritoneal mesothelioma have been credited for extending survival rates far beyond what they might have been without his supervision.
