Clinical care operations take the research done at WFU Medical Center and apply it to care and treatment procedures with the hopes of improving quality of life for patients. To achieve this goal, the center has unique organizational structures they call Centers of Excellence. These allow researchers and scientists to enhance creativity through interaction between the different disciplines of basic science, genetics, preventive medicine and clinical medicine.
Over 200 clinical trials for many types of cancer are conducted at this location. Special areas of clinical research interests include lung cancer, mesothelioma, brain cancer, breast and abdominal cancers. Access to expanded NCI clinical trials is another benefit found at NCI Comprehensive Cancer Centers.
Programs aimed at providing cancer patient support here are so highly regarded that two programs, the Cancer Patient Support Program, and the Psychosocial Oncology Program were upheld by the National Cancer Policy Board as worthy of being a model for all Comprehensive Cancer Centers. Both programs are designed to improve quality of life for cancer patients and their families as they work their way through cancer diagnosis, treatment and recovery. Finding group support is important to patients as they seek comfort during the long processes of a cancer diagnosis and treatment.
For aftercare, the center provides chaplains, staff and volunteers to assist cancer patients. Dressing up following cancer surgery can become an issue for many post operative patients. To assist survivors with this issue, there is the Appearance Boutique and consultation advice for using the variety of products designed to return confidence about appearance following cancer surgeries.
