Based out of the Anschutz Medical Campus of Aurora, Colorado just outside of Denver, the University of Colorado Cancer Center (UCCC) is actually the combined effort of three state universities and five other institutions. A team of over 400 staff performs cancer research at the Anschutz Medical Campus, and delivers patient care at the University of Colorado Hospital and The Children's Hospital, both of which are part of the Anschutz Medical Campus as well. UCCC offers a combined research and patient care approach to cancer, where clinicians and research doctors work in close conjunction in order to provide a specialized focus of care for patients.
Much of the University of Colorado Cancer Center's work revolves around laboratory work, in order to understand different biological markers which can predict if someone will be at risk for cancer, as well as investigating potential gene therapy targets which could treat cancers more effectively and with fewer side effects than conventional therapies. Other research and outreach programs investigate disparities in cancer rates between groups of diverse demographics.
The hospital facilities within UCCC contain 389 beds, although the University of Colorado Hospital does treat many disorders aside from cancer. One aspect of UCCC's treatment which sets it apart from some other National Cancer Institute Cancer Centers is its da Vinci surgical system, which utilizes microscopic instruments controlled robotically in order to undertake surgeries with minimal invasiveness. The doctors at UCCC are all specialists in treating given forms of cancer. To give an example, while lung specialists focus mainly on treating traditional lung cancer, they are also qualified to treat mesothelioma, a unique form of cancer which may be linked to asbestos inhalation.
In addition to the therapies one might expect from a cancer center, such as surgery and clinical trials with promising new pharmacological agents, UCCC also offers a wide-ranging support network for cancer patients and their families. There is a cancer information and counseling line, offering free private counseling over the phone for addressing cancer issues, as well as adjusting to the life of a cancer survivor after treatment. There is also an on-site cancer resource center, which makes information on support groups and networks both at the facility and in the area available to patients. Additionally, they provide guided imagery, stress release, and other audio-visual materials for use while being treated with UCCC. There are also social workers who are available both to inpatient and outpatient cancer victims to provide tips on reducing stressors while undergoing cancer treatment, since oftentimes finances, relationships, lodging, and other concerns can become real issues to someone suffering from mesothelioma or other cancers.
This cancer center has been the focus of several acclaims and is nationally renowned for its clinical research and patient facilities. Regionally, UCCC can boast more doctors rated as Best Doctors in America than other cancer facilities, and 5280 Magazine has rated UCCC's staff as being some of the top doctors in Colorado. Additionally U.S. News and World Report ranks UCCC's hospital facilities as being one of the top 50 in the nation for cancer.
