The UC Davis Cancer Center is considered by many to be one of the best cancer centers in the country. In 2002 it received its National Cancer Institute (NCI) designation based on cancer-based scientific programs that they support. These programs include: molecular oncology; developmental and experimental therapeutics for cancer; prevention and control of cancer; and biomedical technology.

Over 9000 cancer patients are treated at the UC Davis Cancer Center each year, 2200 of which are newly diagnosed cases. These people choose UC Davis for a variety of reasons:

  • They have some of the best cancer specialists in the world.
  • They work in collaboration with other top hospitals in the area.
  • They have one of the biggest clinical trials program in the country.

Medical Oncology

The diagnosis and treatment program for cancer at the UC Davis Cancer Center is one of the largest on the West Coast. The medical oncologists join with physicians from Surgical Oncology and Radiation Oncology to come up with the most accurate diagnosis possible and provide innovative and individualized treatment.

The medical oncologists are particularly well-versed in the fields of lung and other thoracic-related cancers, including mesothelioma.

Patients are given access to the latest drugs and cancer therapies that are molecularly targeted through the Cancer Center’s clinical trials program, one of the leading programs in the U.S.

Surgical Oncology

The Surgical Oncology department is recognized nationally for their new technologies and their research in the surgical oncology field. The department’s surgeon-scientists are constantly involved with research to study the causes of and treatment for cancer. Like the Medical Oncology department, they use clinical trials to improve on diagnostic techniques and treatments for cancer.

Thoracic Oncology

The Thoracic Oncology program is known not just nationally but also internationally for its lung cancer and other thoracic cancer therapies. This department offers a wide variety of both clinical and research services that range from how to prevent cancer to new and improved diagnostics and treatments. On top of their lung cancer expertise, they also provide diagnosis and treatment regimens for other thoracic malignancies like mesothelioma.

The specialists in this department include some of the country’s best lung cancer researchers who are constantly initiating and conducting clinical trials for investigational therapies. All of the UC Davis Cancer Center’s clinical trials are sponsored by the National Cancer Institute.

Before treating a patient for cancer like mesothelioma, the physicians in the Thoracic Oncology department consider the patient’s complete clinical and medical records, including all imaging studies that have been performed. A team of physicians, nurses, dietitians, clinical research associates, and even social workers get together to plan all aspects of a completely individualized treatment plan for the patient. The treatment could include things such as:

  • Chemotherapy
  • Molecular targeted therapy that attacks the tumor directly
  • Radiation
  • Surgery
  • Therapies that combine any or all of these other treatments

Scientific Programs

The research at the Cancer Center is organized into specific programs that each have experts in that field assigned to them. Some of the programs are:

  • Molecular oncology – This program focuses on understanding cancer and its progression through the molecular and chemical makeup of cancer cells and tumors.
  • Cancer therapeutics – The goals of this program are to develop new drugs, identify new targets for therapeutics, and to study patient tissues.
  • Biomedical technology – This program’s interests are in developing new imaging systems to improve cancer diagnostics and to find new technologies that will optimize the delivery of the chosen therapy.
