The Case Comprehensive Cancer Center and Ireland Cancer Center are each affiliated with University Hospitals in Cleveland, Ohio. Case has met the National Cancer Institute’s strict requirements to be designated as comprehensive cancer centers. By meeting these high standards for excellence in treatment and research of cancer, it can offer great solutions for cancer patients in the northern Ohio region.

The Case Comprehensive Cancer Center is a collaborative effort between several partner organizations and is based at Case Western Reserve University. This group organization encompasses all cancer related research that is conducted at Case Western Reserve University, the prestigious Cleveland Clinic, and University Hospitals Case Medical Center. As an NCI Comprehensive Cancer Center, Case CCC is one of only 40 designated Comprehensive Centers in the United States.

Advanced research on cancer and cancer treatment services comprise a good part of the work expected from designated comprehensive cancer centers. Between Case Comprehensive Cancer Center and Ireland Cancer Center the public receives the benefit of leading edge research and state-of-the-art cancer treatment and patient care. The northern Ohio region is populated by about 4 million people, many of whom have higher than normal occurrence rates for cancer, including mesothelioma.

The Ireland Cancer Center provides education and training for students, health care professionals, patients and the general public. It has many outreach services for the region’s population and offers clinical trials by over 300 scientists, physicians and researchers. The scope of professional cooperation and group investigation into the problems, treatment and prevention of cancer benefits cancer studies throughout the nation. Other research activities are focused on non-embryonic stem cell research and treatment of leukemia.

There are several major NCI programs for research and outreach hosted by the Case Comprehensive Cancer Center. Studies involve prevention techniques, screening initiatives, education and minority recruiting. A new research program is looking at the possible links between obesity and cancer. Participation by patients in clinical trials here is far above average participation rates, about 17 percent, compared to a national average of only about 3 percent.

Patients and others seeking treatment at Case Comprehensive Cancer Center and Ireland Cancer Center have access to a wide range of services. Basic research information, advanced treatment, psychosocial and supportive care top the list of special cancer related services offered at Case CCC and Ireland CC. Individual patient care plans are created by a group of health care professionals that includes surgeons, radiologists, specialized oncology nurses, social workers, dieticians, social workers, music/art therapists and others.

These centers currently serve over 7300 new patients annually, but that is expected to triple due to the new Vision 2010 strategic plan for new facilities, including the construction and opening in 2010 of a free standing cancer hospital. A culmination of this $1.2 billion strategic plan, the new cancer hospital will be the first in the region. The benefits of the extensive group of cancer professionals here affect patients in this region and nationwide. The institutions are members of the NCI’s Cancer Biomedical Informatics Grid initiative which allows active pursuit of electronic databases for clinical trials and tissue repositories. Related bioinformatics information is constantly being expanded due to work done at these cancer centers in Ohio.
