Community Clinical Oncology Program

Scott & White Healthcare began serving the area around Temple, Texas in 1897 when two physicians, Arthur C. Scott and Raleigh White, Jr. started their medical practice. Since then, Scott & White Healthcare has grown into one of the largest hospital facilities in Texas practicing multiple disciplines of medicine. It has been on the list of Solucient 100 Top Ten Hospitals in the U.S. for four years in a row, and for six years straight it has been included in the Thomson 100 Top Hospitals in the country.

Community Clinical Oncology Program (CCOP)

One of the many departments and clinics at Scott & White is the Cancer Institute, which is a National Cancer Institute Community Clinical Oncology Program (NCI-CCOP). The title indicates that the National Cancer Institute (NCI) has designated it as a Community Clinical Oncology Program and therefore provides funding for their research and clinical trials.

As a CCOP, they take part in group clinical trials with other CCOP hospitals and cancer centers. There are over 150 clinical trials for the prevention, control, and treatment of cancer available through Scott & White’s CCOP.

The Lung Cancer Team and Lung Cancer Clinic

The Scott & White Cancer Institute is comprised of 12 cancer teams, each specializing in different forms of cancer. This includes the Lung Cancer Team and the Lung Cancer Treatment Clinic. This team has experts in pulmonary medicine, radiation and medical oncology, and thoracic surgery. Every cancer team also uses chaplains, psychologists, social workers, technicians, nurses, and counselors in financial aid to help patients and their families get through their tough times.

The Lung Cancer Team not only offers treatment for cancers of the lung like small cell lung cancer and non-small cell lung cancer, but they also treat patients with the rare asbestos-related cancer called mesothelioma. They apply combination treatments of surgery, chemotherapy, and/or radiation. The treatment of each patient is designed specifically for that patient’s needs. At the clinic, the patient meets with each person taking part in his or her care. The patient is thought of as a member of the Lung Cancer Team when it comes to lining out the best plan of treatment.

If a patient has a more advanced form of lung cancer or mesothelioma, specifically stage IV cancer, they are treated in the general Oncology Clinic at the hospital.

Patients at the Lung Cancer Treatment Clinic may also qualify to take part in the many clinical trials conducted by the Lung Cancer Team as part of the Community Clinical Oncology Program.

Research and Developmental Therapeutics

Besides treating cancer patients, the Cancer Institute at Scott & White conducts research and combines that with new technological advances and education to fight cancer. Important research is strongly augmented by the clinical trials conducted because of the Community Clinical Oncology Program. The research and clinical trials can result in new drugs and combinations of drugs, ways to establish the dosage of a new drug, and ascertaining how safe and effective the drug is. Research and trials also are also performed in order to come up with new investigational devices to potentially be used for preventing and diagnosing cancer as well as treating it.

One of Scott & White’s research programs is the Developmental Therapeutics (DT) program. This program’s research is aimed solely at the development of new drugs and 30 of the 150 clinical trials being conducted through the Cancer Institute are based on this research.
