The Taussig Cancer Institute is a division of the Cleveland Clinic, a network of hospitals and centers based in Cleveland, Ohio. The Institute was rated #1 in the state of Ohio and #12 in the nation by U.S. News and World Report in 2009. Oncologists for the Institute work in the Hillcrest and Fairview Hospitals, as well as many of the health centers that comprise the Cleveland Clinic’s network. The Taussig Center treats a wide range of cancers with a variety of methods, such as surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy. Over 250 oncology specialists at the Institute treat about 26,000 patients every year.

The Taussig Cancer Institute has specific departments for treating an assortment of cancers: the Hematologic Oncology and Blood Disorder Department; Radiation Oncology; Regional Oncology; Solid Tumor Oncology; and Translational Oncology and Hematological Research.

The Hematologic Oncology and Blood Disorder Department specializes in treating patients with cancers of the marrow, blood, and lymph nodes, as well as individuals with non-cancerous blood disorders. The Radiation Oncology Department is comprised of radiotherapy specialists, who treat more than 4,500 patients with a variety of cancers. Patients may be referred to the Radiation Oncology specialists by another oncology department for their treatment. Regional Oncology is responsible for the care of patients across the state of Ohio who may not be able to travel to the Taussig Center’s main locations.

Solid Tumor Oncology patients are those with genitourinary, brain and spinal cord, breast, head and neck, gastrointestinal, skin, and lung cancers. Patients with mesothelioma, a type of cancer that can affect the lungs, heart, stomach or testicles, are typically seen in the Solid Tumor Oncology department. This department uses traditional methods to fight mesothelioma, as well new approaches, such as biologic therapy. Biologic therapy, also called biotherapy or immunotherapy, utilizes the patient’s own immune system to fight cancer. This therapy may be beneficial to mesothelioma patients who want to try a different treatment process. The Translational Hematology and Oncology Research Department is responsible for new diagnostic methods, clinical trials, and targeted therapies.

At the Cleveland Clinic Taussig Cancer Institute, a number of support services are available to assist the patient and their families in their cancer fight. Social workers are on hand to offer support, counseling, and referrals to various community resources. The social workers may also act as advocates for issues relating to medical care within the facility. The Cancer Answer Line and Patient Resource Center are areas staffed by oncology nurse specialists, and offer information to individuals and their families related to the cancer diagnosis. Art therapy classes are offered once a week through the clinic and give patients a chance to express themselves through a variety of media. The Reflections Wellness Program is a free plan that offers spa services, such as facials and Reiki treatments, to patients within the center. Sessions are one-on-one and are available by appointment.

High Tea at Taussig, started in 2007, occurs weekly and is open to patients and their families, as well as oncology employees who are interested. High tea is an opportunity for individuals to relax and enjoy a service designed to offer a “pause” from a hectic and stressful week. The Psycho-Oncology Program works with patients who experience anxiety and depression, aiding them in a comprehensive approach to treatment and improving overall quality of life. A number of specialized support groups, some sponsored through the American Cancer Society, meet at the Taussig Institute weekly or monthly. Patients who are interested in attending a support group should contact the Social Work department for more information.
