In California, the Stanford Cancer Center has assembled a world-class group of over 300 expert researchers and clinicians to focus their talents on cancer research. This dedicated group of individuals forms multidisciplinary teams to break open the secrets of cancer. Their work has resulted into some of the latest methods for cancer detection and diagnosis. The Stanford Cancer Center research efforts combine with leading edge technology and new patient support practices to bring to patients the most advanced opportunities for prevention and treatment of cancer. The center is a state-of-the-art facility that offers students advanced professional training, while the public benefits from an outstanding outreach program.

The center is staffed with over 240 Stanford University School of Medicine faculty members. Their affiliation with the University and their convenient location on the Stanford University campus at Palo Alto makes this one of the most advanced cancer centers in the nation. The medical school is known best as a national center for cancer research. Oncologists here and at the Lucille Packard Children’s Hospital treat many types of cancer, including children’s cancers.

As a national cancer research leader, the Stanford Cancer Center programs focus on new technology and research into radiation biology, cancer biology, stem cell research, molecular profiling and cancer imaging. They also are studying lymphoma and Hodgkin’s disease. Another area of research is devoted to immunology, immunotherapy, cancer epidemiology and hematopoietic cell transplantation.

Many clinical trials are conducted at this cancer center. These programs are offered to adult and child participants who qualify for clinical trials as a treatment option. These studies are used to measure the effectiveness and safety of various cancer treatments.

U.S. News & World Report lists Stanford Cancer Center as number 16 on their listing for all American hospitals. A good part of this ranking deals with how cancer patients are treated and the skills of the physicians, scientists and researchers who are working on center projects.

Patient care at this cancer center includes inpatient, outpatient and outreach programs. Adults are treated at the Stanford Hospital and Clinics in Palo Alto. Pediatric patients are served at nearby Lucille Packard Children’s Hospital. The Stanford University Cancer Center offers treatment for particularly rare forms of cancer. Both hospitals provide comprehensive cancer treatment and care for all types of cancer, including mesothelioma.

For community outreach, the Stanford Cancer Center has educational and screening programs available. Early detection and cancer treatment are primary programs. The Office of Community Health educates future community leaders to better enable them to distribute cancer awareness and prevention educational information to the surrounding community. In addition, there are student-run free clinics to offer low or no-cost cancer care and other medical needs for economically disadvantaged youth and adults from the community.

In 2007, The National Cancer Institute designated Stanford Cancer Center as an NCI Cancer Center. This means the center has achieved the strict requirements of NCI for research activities to improve cancer prevention, treatment and care. The center has also been named a Ludwig Center for their expertise in cancer stem cell research.
