The NYU Cancer Institute is located in New York City, New York. It is a section of the NYU Langone Medical Center, an academic medical facility located in the borough of Manhattan. The Cancer Institute is comprised of eight unique facilities that care for patients, and is affiliated with the greater University and the other specialized medical institutes in the city. The NYU Cancer Institute has been a designated Cancer Center by the National Cancer Institute since 1975. They are affiliated with many notable hospitals, including Bellevue, the oldest public hospital in the country. The facility has more than 150,000 feet of space and sees about 165,000 patients a year. Each year, the Institute utilizes nearly $90 million in research funds, with about $20 million coming directly from the National Cancer Institute.
The NYU Cancer Institute has a number of programs designed to address different issues with cancer. One such example is CORE, or the Cancer Outreach, Outcomes, and Research for Equity center. This division seeks to lessen the disparities in a cancer diagnosis between different races, gender, and age. The Nelson Institute of Environmental Medicine, another department of the Cancer Institute, seeks to discover factors in natural and working environments that play a part in a person’s cancer diagnosis. The Thoracic Oncology Bank, headed by Dr. Harvey Pass, is a 2,000+ tissue specimen bank used in research and clinical trial development. Patients with mesothelioma may benefit from agreeing to have tissue banked here, due to Dr. Pass’s discovery through banking that a single microRNA is a master controller in malignant mesothelioma growth.
The NYU Clinical Cancer Institute deals with all outpatient needs, including diagnosis, testing, and treatment options. The Cancer Institute contains many research facilities, including the Smilow Research Center, the General Clinical Research Center, and the Skirball Institute for Biomolecular Medicine. More than 150 clinical trials are available at any given time with a 20% patient participation rate. Treatment options for patients include surgery, molecular-targeted therapies, Gamma knife and conformal focused irradiation therapies, and traditional chemotherapy.
Patient support services at NYU Cancer Institute are designed to give emotional and practical aid to patients and their families, whether the patient is an adult or child. Social work services can offer various types of referrals, counseling, and information on community programs for all ages. Registered dieticians can suggest advice and tips on proper nutrition during treatment, as well as offer nutritional therapy for parents of children with cancer. Pastoral counseling is available in multiple denominations during normal business hours. Chaplains can also be reached in an emergency or on weekends if needed, and religious services for the Jewish and Catholic community are held throughout the week. Services provided by a trained psychiatrist include interventions, pain management, psychiatric evaluations and referrals, and palliative care, among others. Small-group and bedside art therapy is available for patients and their families, as well as hospital staff. Children being treated at the Institute and their parents can also partake in art therapy, pet therapy, massage, yoga, Reiki, and guided imagery, or the use of soothing images created in the mind. The Supportive Services Program also offers patient support groups for those dealing with gynecologic, lung, breast, and prostate cancers. Groups are also available for young women found to have the breast cancer gene mutation. Interested individuals should speak with their doctors or contact the Supportive Services staff.
