Its location in La Jolla is frequently referred to as the “Golden Triangle.” Other companies in the Golden Triangle include 200 biomedical and pharmaceutical companies as well as other medical research facilities. Interactions between the Moores Cancer Center and these other institutions frequently occur that are beneficial to both.

The Moores Cancer Center was established in 1978, and is one of the 40 centers in the U.S. With a National Cancer Institute (NCI) designation as a Comprehensive Cancer Center. This designation makes it one of the top cancer centers in the country when it comes to cancer research, patient care, and providing the public with cancer education programs.

Moores able to take advantage of its affiliation with UC San Diego. For instance, they are working with UCSD’s oceanography department to try and uncover new chemotherapy drugs from algae and other organisms found in the sea. Also located on the UCSD campus is a branch of the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research. This allows members of the Cancer Center to combine their work with that of the Institute.

Lung Cancer and Mesothelioma Patient Care

The Moores Cancer Center has a dedicated Lung Cancer Unit that strives to give patients with lung cancer and mesothelioma the best possible treatments. Both of these cancers are very complex diseases and the members of the Lung Cancer Unit look at every possible option for treatment, including traditional treatments in the form of chemotherapy, surgical options, and radiation treatment.

Lung cancer and mesothelioma are life-threatening diseases and patients suffering from these diseases are referred to this facility from all parts of the country. The Moores Cancer Center is a top-ranked facility when it comes to treating lung cancers.

At Moores, they are using an innovative treatment that can be applied only to certain cancers that are very difficult to treat. These cancers are those where it has spread to the lining of the abdominal cavity. This includes one of the forms of mesothelioma that affects the lining of the stomach, called peritoneal mesothelioma. The treatment is called HIPEC, which stands for Heated Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy. The procedure is performed during surgery to remove a tumor. After the tumor is removed, a heated solution of chemotherapy agents is circulated through the abdomen of the patient. The solution is then removed before the incision is closed.

Research/Clinical Trials

The Moores Cancer Center has several research programs, including:

  • The Tumor Growth, Invasion and Metastasis Program – The goal of this research is to discover new diagnostic methods and therapies based on the things that control the growth of tumors as well as the tumor’s sensitivity to drugs.
  • Cancer Prevention and Control – The focus for the members of this research team is to add to what is already known about what things promote the reduction in cancer incidences and to learn more about cancer mortality rates.

Part of the research program and the excellent patient care provided at the Moores Cancer Center is the availability of clinical trials. Research studies almost always require the participation of patients. When standard treatment does not work for a patient, they have the option to participate in clinical trials related to their disease.
