Missouri Cancer Care joins aggressively with other St. Louis oncology groups in the fight against cancer. An independent group, MCC is one of the largest cancer treatment and research groups in the city. It also is the only oncology group dedicated to serving only St. Charles and Lincoln counties. The practice has a mission to carry on with efforts to reduce the impact and burden of cancer disease upon the local population through research. They believe scientific discovery is the best way to apply their work to the local residents.

St. Louis, Missouri, is a very large metropolitan area. MCC has several locations in town and several satellite consultation offices. The satellite facilities also have treatment rooms for chemotherapy, hematology and radiation therapy.

Missouri Cancer Care brings to local patients the newest advances in detection and treatment technology. Leading edge radiation techniques are proving to be beneficial for use with malignancies that are especially hard to treat. Intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) is the newest form of radiation therapy available for use in clinical applications. Fewer side effects from this treatment can be expected by patients who are provided this type of radiation for tough to fight cancers. Head, brain, neck, prostate and pancreatic cancers are difficult to treat, but they respond well to this new therapy tool.

Another new service for Missouri Cancer Care patients is the opening of the MCC specialty pharmacy. In a constant effort to put patients first during their battle against cancer, the MCC pharmacy works with physicians and the clinic to improve patient compliance in taking their prescriptions. The pharmacy stocks special medications needed for oncology and hematology treatments. As well, staff pharmacists are trained in oncology. Their understanding of this practice allows them to be able to communicate better with patients regarding medications. Drugs and supplies are delivered to patient homes or to their doctor’s office for easy pick up. It is hoped that this extra convenience will increase the level of patient compliance with pharmaceutical instructions given by physicians.

Patient services include some financial assistance with medication purchases. MCC is able to reduce prices by working directly with the manufacturers of oncology drugs. Some specific financial aid is also available to MCC patients.

Missouri Cancer Care runs clinical trials for various types of human cancer, including lung cancers like mesothelioma. These particular lung cancers now affect many thousands of Missouri residents who were exposed to the carcinogens decades earlier. Additionally MCC currently is a participant in the largest ever clinical trial focusing on partial-breast irradiation. This national NIH clinical trial will have great significance for women with stage I and II breast cancer.
