The University of Mississippi Medical Center opened in 1955. It is located on the University of Mississippi health science campus in Jackson, Mississippi. This center works closely with the Mississippi Cancer Registry, which tracks cancer data in the state and supports the work of the medical center. Other related medical organizations on campus include the University Hospital and Clinics.

UMC has always been a leader in research. Making headlines and history in 1963, the Hospital performed the world’s first human lung transplant. That record was followed up in 1964, when the world’s first heart transplant was performed here, using the heart of a chimpanzee.

Fighting cancer is a top priority at this medical center. Research, patient care, education and data collection are all elements within the battle against cancer. The Mississippi Cancer Registry provides accurate data for researchers performing clinical training. Students see first-hand how to manage and use health information and how new technology affects those statistics. Clinical studies are another part of the information gathering process.

Mississippi has a high cancer occurrence rate, with over 13,000 residents per year being diagnosed with the disease. This is one reason the Mississippi Legislature provided funds to open the Cancer Registry. Data to the Registry is sent in from health professionals across the state. It is hoped that one day this collection of data will help researchers find and develop a cure for cancer.

The University of Mississippi Medical Center is integrated into the UM Health Care System. The University of Mississippi is a facility that specializes in transplantation, as well as a Level 1 trauma center. Medical center patients expect and receive the best care in the state from these medical campus organizations.

All clinics and hospitals are naturally involved in education at UM. The Center has a 722-bed referral center for diagnostics and treatment of cancer. Each year, these facilities see over 27,000 inpatients. Outpatient and emergency services treat more than 500,000 persons annually. There are multiple programs available to treat all types of cancers. The Mississippi Children’s Cancer Center is a special care clinic for children.

By having such a great number of medical, research, treatment and care facilities all in one location, UMMC is able to offer better care, more information and top quality medical and surgical services to patients and the public. Providing one-stop, comprehensive cancer care with state-of-the-art technology and medical advances means improvement in the quality of life for patients and their families. Oncology professionals can use the campus organizations as an excellent resource for their own research and applied clinical care.

It is interesting to know that among other notable distinctions for this medical center, the University Hospitals and Health System was a pioneer in the initial stages of development of the MRI. There were only three original test sites in the United States for this MRI imaging system; UMMC was one site selected to participate.
