The Mayo Clinic is a world famous medical and research center. The U.S. News and World Report of Best Hospitals has consistently placed Mayo Clinic among their top listings for over two decades. It ranks #4 in the United States for all cancer hospitals. Of 4,851 hospitals considered, only 174 ranked in at least one of 16 specialties. Mayo Clinic and 20 other hospitals made the Honor Roll. Mayo Clinic excelled over others by ranking in the top 12 hospitals in all 16 specialty categories.

This massive medical clinic occupies a campus in downtown Rochester, Minnesota, that is equal to three times the Mall of America. Over 30,000 persons work here, including 2,500 scientists, researchers and physicians. The clinic is patient friendly, with a large adjacent parking area and free shuttle service between all Mayo Clinic buildings and Saint Mary’s Hospital. The clinic has additional locations in Scottsdale/Phoenix, AZ and in Jacksonville, FL.

Patients travel great distances to obtain medical care at the Mayo Clinic. It was the first hospital in America to use an integrated group practice to include far more doctors than a small clinic could do. This group practice concept was so successful that it is now a standard organizational model for other group practices in the United States. In addition, over 40% of Mayo Clinic financial resources are directed towards research.

Mayo Clinic physicians and researchers use state-of-the-art technology and clinical trials to develop new diagnostic procedures and innovative treatment therapies for many conditions, including mesothelioma and other rare diseases. Regular group practices may have a few to a hundred doctors on staff; Mayo Clinic offers over 1,700 doctors to patients.

Clinical trials are important to developing innovative technology, new drugs and improving patient care. Over 8,000 human studies are underway at any one time in this massive clinic setting. Just as many other projects are being investigated in laboratories and research labs. In 2008, the clinic’s research budget alone totaled $523 million.

The clinic receives over $100 million in grants, including NCI’s Specialized Program Of Research Excellence (SPORE) program grants. Six grants are in use for research study on brain, prostate, breast and pancreatic cancers and research into lymphoma and myeloma. The Mayo Clinic is now participating in 12 major programs for cancer research.

With this scope of capabilities, Mayo Clinic remains a world leader for biomedical engineering, cancer studies, bioinformatics and other aspects of health care delivery. Over 19,500 cancer patients come to Mayo Clinic for treatment each year. Hundreds of clinical trials are available for those who want to participate in research.

Mayo Clinic is one of 65 clinics and hospitals that have been awarded the designation of Cancer Center or Comprehensive Cancer Center by the National Cancer Institute. Mayo Clinic has been one since the beginning of the NCI program over thirty years ago. Mayo Clinic regularly meets the highest standards required for designation as a Comprehensive Cancer Center.

As a Comprehensive Cancer Center, Mayo Clinic must meet high standards of service to the industry and to the public. They must participate in NCI high-priority clinical studies and meet needs of the public for information about cancer prevention and education. Support groups and public outreach programs disseminate cancer information to the public and governments. Finally, health care professionals receive education and training in the latest technology and advancement in cancer care at Mayo Clinic.
