Residents of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan are very fortunate to have access to cancer treatment at the Marquette General Cancer Center. Patients benefit from the center’s affiliations with other major cancer treatment and research centers in the state, bringing UP residents the best in leading edge cancer care.

Specialists from the Marquette center regularly visit patients in eight communities across the Upper Peninsula to provide home care and to oversee their cancer treatment. Center physicians work closely with colleagues at other cancer care hospitals to pool information and share research.

The Marquette General Cancer Center is run by Marquette General Hospital, which is designated as a federal Regional Referral Center. Both are included under the broad umbrella of the Marquette General Health System. The small hospital only has 335 beds, but employs a staff of 200 physicians. Another 220 health care workers in this system coordinate efforts to serve 12,000 inpatients. Outpatient traffic numbers around 350,000 patients annually. Marquette General is the largest hospital in the county, and it has been among the top 100 cardiovascular care hospitals in the country for many years.

The center easily ranks high for knowledge of advanced cancer diagnostics, treatment and research. It is approved by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer. The MGHS Emergency Department is an ACS designated Level II Trauma Center. This is the highest status possible outside a major population center. The group performs over 9,000 surgeries yearly. Their most recent cancer treatment project is a $6 million upgrade program for cancer radiation equipment.

The Cancer Center offers patients the latest technological advances in cancer treatments. Surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, hormone treatment and participation in clinical trials and research are traditional treatments. New treatment programs like Interventional Oncology are welcomed by patients who like minimally invasive local procedures. This new technology targets tumors without destroying the surrounding tissue. Recovery times for patients are frequently reduced when new technology is used.

Marquette General Cancer Center is an affiliate of the Karmanos Cancer Center, an NCI designated Comprehensive Cancer Center located in Detroit. This collaboration of medical expertise brings opportunities for leading edge therapies, cancer care, higher-level clinical trials and research to residents of the Upper Peninsula. It also benefits patients who need second opinions from highly trained Karmanos Cancer Center physicians and specialists.

Other collaborations include teaming up local experts in brain tumor research at The Neuroscience Center with scientists at Northern Michigan University. Patients at Marquette General Cancer Center are able to participate in major clinical trials for research through these connections with other research facilities. The affiliation with Karmanos Cancer Center allows area cancer patients to have access to National Cancer Institute clinical trials. These studies are limited to just 40 NCI designated comprehensive cancer centers, including Karmanos.

The Marquette General Health Systems physicians are skilled in 64 medical specialties from general medicine to heart and brain treatment. Advanced cancer, such as malignant mesothelioma, is another area of medical research that has received much attention. Many Michigan residents suffer from this painful cancer and others that take years or decades to develop. Recent breakthrough cancer research offers hope and some remedy for many afflicted patients.
