The Markey Cancer Center is located on the campus of the University of Kentucky in Lexington. The center was established in 1978 by the McDowell Cancer Foundation. This foundation was later named the Markey Cancer Foundation. Its sole purpose was to generate funds for the Markey Cancer Center. The center currently has at least 150 oncologists and scientists on staff to serve their cancer patients.
Oncologists at the Markey Cancer Center have been providing high quality cancer service for over 20 years. Highly trained oncologists, nurses, nutritionists, social workers and other staff are on call to assist cancer patients through every aspect of the process. The Markey Cancer Center strives to provide relief and treatment to patients suffering from any of the 100 types of cancers that exist. Currently, the center addresses the following types of cancer:
The list is not exhaustive and other cancers are treated at the Markey Cancer Center. However, this is a cross section of the types of cancers that are treated.
The Markey Cancer Center consists of 4 cancer care facilities. The center is in partnership with the University of Kentucky Hospital and College of Medicine. Some of the patient facilities include private rooms and other facilities to accommodate the patient.
This facility aids the diagnosis of cancer and monitors the development of the disease through continual testing. The tests are conducted at the Davis-Mills Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Spectroscopy Center (MRISC).
This facility focuses on major cancers such as lung cancer, gastrointestinal cancer, hematologic cancer, gynecologic cancers, breast cancer, and urologic cancers. Many of these services are related to ambulatory care.
The Markey Cancer Center also provides preventative care for individuals who have a family history of cancer disease. These individuals may receive genetic testing to determine their propensity for developing a cancerous disease based upon their genetic composition.
Over 100 clinical studies for a variety of cancers are available for patient selection. Participation is on a voluntary basis, but is encouraged for those seeking to improve their prognosis with leading edge cancer treatments. Each of the trials adheres to the standards set forth in guidelines provided by the National Cancer Institute (NCI). Markey Cancer Center seeks to improve communication among scientists conducting clinical trials in order to develop effective and quality cancer therapies faster.
Oncologists will develop specialized treatments for each patient to ensure the best prognosis and recovery. For patients who have developed pleural mesothelioma, strategic alliances with other research entities were formed to expedite development. Such facilities include, Marty Driesler Project, the Kentucky Lung Cancer Project, and Kentucky Clinical Trials Network. Each is focused on lung cancer research, the most commonly affected organ in this rare cancer disease. The Markey Lung and Thoracic Cancer center also specializes in rare cancer diseases caused by asbestos.
