UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center is very proud of their National Cancer Institute CCC designation and constantly strive to maintain this title. In America, there are just 40 medical facilities that have been honored with this award of excellence from the NCI.

Leading edge technological advances in treatment can be seen in their surgery and cancer treatment therapies. Surgeons use the latest methods for their work, including video-assist equipment. Chemotherapy and radiation therapy combined with follow up surgery is another program for some cancer patients; laser treatment also joins the latest techniques for battling cancer.

Any new developments that may be on the horizon for cancer detection, treatment or prevention are either created here or used here. This is one of few institutions in this area of the country to have a Light-Induced Fluorescence Endoscope (LIFE), an instrument used for studying premalignant lesions at the molecular level. UNC is equipped with much state-of-the-art equipment, including a new CT-Fluoroscopy unit.

The UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center treats all types of adult and childhood cancer diseases, including the rare, occupational cancer mesothelioma. Their mission is to reduce and eliminate cancer wherever it strikes. Populations are studied to discover genetic links, behaviors or other elements specific to humans that allow cancer to run rampant. The center treats or diagnoses around 3,000 new cancer patients every year. Outpatient visits to UNC Lineberger by patients from all North Carolina counties add up to over 100,000 annually. The center has an extensive outreach and education program in place to reach underserved populations. Students also use the center’s educational library and research studies to enhance their own educational knowledge.

Professionals at UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center understand that the patient facing cancer is on a journey that often seems to be confusing, scary and lonely. The N.C. Cancer Hospital has chosen to deal with this problem by creating their Comprehensive Cancer Support Program. This multidisciplinary support program works to help cancer patients and their families find the resources they need on this long journey. Each case is treated individually and experts provide compassion, support and meaningful information to patients and caregivers. Treatment, recovery and survivorship are the goals for this support program.

Clinical care and the opportunity to join clinical trials are also an important part of all research programs. Data is collected and interpreted as physicians, specialists and researchers work with cancer patients to help find a cure for cancer. As a designated CCC by the NCI, this center has special access to additional clinical trials that are located across the country.

UNC Lineberger CCC offers the public the opportunity to join 15 major clinical care programs. These are conducted at patient services and research facilities that are located on the south end of the UNC campus in Chapel Hill, NC.
