The Kimmel Cancer Center (KCC), affiliated with Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, was founded in 1991 by a dedicated group of 30 basic science researchers. Today, it has expanded to more than 150 members. The Kimmel Cancer Center at Jefferson, named for its most generous benefactor, Sidney Kimmel, is a National Cancer Institute (NCI) designated cancer center, an award reserved for those cancer facilities that meet strict guidelines established by the NCI. U.S. News and World Report also recognizes Jefferson Hospital as one of the best hospitals in the nation for cancer treatment. Jefferson is also a Blue Distinction Center for Complex and Rare Cancers, awarded by the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association to specialty centers that adhere to the highest standards of cancer medical care. The physicians and scientists, dedicated to innovation in the detection and treatment of cancer, are internationally renowned.

The center is currently under the direction of Richard G. Pestell, M.D., and under his leadership, the peer-reviewed funding of the Kimmel Cancer Center has grown from $35.4 to $52.4 million. Peer-reviewed grants have increased by a count of 74. The KCC has added 43 new funded members. Last year, the center obtained an additional $70 million in grants from federal sources as well as private foundations and pharmaceutical companies. The National Institutes of Health also sponsor training programs for medical students and fellows, adding $1 million annually in support.

Since its inception, the Kimmel Cancer Center has experienced exponential growth in its basic science and clinical programs. There are eight multidisciplinary centers that offer cancer-specific research and care, including facilities for brain tumors, breast cancer, urology cancers, colorectal cancers, and lung cancers such as pleural mesothelioma. The Bodine Center for Cancer Treatment offers the latest advancements in radiation oncology. There are three other radiological centers: the Breast Imaging Center, the Prostate Diagnostic Center, and the Integrative Medicine Center at Jefferson, Myrna Brind. The numerous basic science programs include Cancer Cell Biology and Signaling, Endocrine Mechanisms and Hormone Action in Cancer, and Immunological Mechanisms in Cancer, among others. With a full complement of core facilities and shared resources, all avenues of research are thoroughly supported.

Cancer treatment at the Kimmel Cancer Center employs the latest technology, combined with state-of-the-art therapeutics and the most current clinical trial alternatives. With considerable weight placed on translational research, the center strives to convert the most current clinical discoveries into novel treatment modalities for their cancer patients as rapidly as possible.

In 1993, the Jefferson Kimmel Cancer Center set up its Cancer Center network to give patients in its affiliated hospitals access to the most current developments in technology and treatment. The Kimmel Cancer Center invites the patients at member facilities to participate in promising clinical trials, and encourages the physicians under its umbrella to collaborate and coordinate care for their patients, allowing their charges to benefit from the best cancer care even when close to home.
