Located in Rochester, NY, the James P. Wilmot Cancer Center at the University of Rochester Medical Center is one of the leading cancer treatment facilities in the region. The approach to cancer care at Wilmot is a multidisciplinary, collaborative one; oncologists, surgeons, subspecialists and staff members from all areas of the medical profession work together to create a patient-centered model of treatment. This collaboration also enables the patient to receive the most up-to-date information and available treatments for his or her particular cancer, in order to improve their prognosis and their quality of life.

In addition, patients at the Wilmot Cancer Center have the opportunity to join one of hundreds of ongoing, open clinical trials being conducted at the U of R Medical Center.

The James P. Wilmot Cancer Center offers comprehensive services for patients with all types of cancer, including malignant mesothelioma, and their families. These services include screening, diagnosis, treatment, support services, care clinics and clinical trials. Conventional treatments and experimental ones are both employed as appropriate, and recommendations and referrals to external facilities are also given to patients who require additional services.

One of the ways in which the staff and patients at Wilmot connect is through the Patient and Family Advisory Council, which serves to enrich communication among those involved in cancer treatment, and to promote patient advocacy and involvement in the treatment process. The Council is made up of 13 current patients and their family members, as well as five members of the Wilmot Cancer Center health care team. This is in addition to the support services for patients offered by the Center, which include staff social workers, support groups, educational resources, transportation to treatments, home care, and medical supplies and equipment.

There are even volunteer ambassadors who assist patients with directions, support and answers to common questions; most of these volunteer ambassadors are cancer survivors or the loved one of a cancer survivor, which helps them to understand the concerns and needs of new patients.

The mission of this institution is centered around a commitment to provide the most advanced and compassionate patient care possible. With a new building, completed in 2008 as part of a five-year, $65 million expansion program, the Wilmot Cancer Center welcomes its patients with an inviting and healing physical environment. The groundbreaking design of the facility emphasizes open space, natural light and comfortable spaces in which patients and family members alike can receive all aspects of cancer care. It also has a floor dedicated to research and to the evaluation of clinical trial results, which benefits researchers and clinicians.
