Hematology/Oncology Associates of Central New York is a private practice with four locations. The practice is headquartered in East Syracuse; additional locations are found in Onondaga Hill, Syracuse; Rome, NY; Camillus, NY; and Liverpool, NY. Created in 1982, the main facility is a 65,000 square foot building offering a range of treatments, laboratory services, clinical research, a full pharmacy, and a number of patient services. Imaging services are conducted in partnership with the Medical Imaging Centers of Central New York. Sixteen physicians specializing in medical oncology comprise the doctoral staff, with a board-certified fellow acting as C.E.O. Each year, approximately 2,500 new patients visit the practice, and about 100,000 patient visits are completed yearly.

Research and treatment are at the core of the mission of Hematology/Oncology Associates of Central New York. Two state-of-the-art technologies employed at the facility are image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT) and the Cyberknife System. Image-guided radiation therapy uses a linear accelerator guided by computers and robotics to deliver a highly accurate dose of radiation. This technology attacks tumor cells while minimizing damage to healthy surrounding cells. The Cyberknife System is a type of radiosurgery that requires no uncomfortable frames to stabilize the body during treatment. Patients with mesothelioma may benefit from this treatment because the Cyberknife System can attack tumors previously believed to be inoperable, all the while eliminating typical surgery recovery times. The Cyberknife System utilizes a robotic delivery structure to track, detect, and continuously deliver a sub-millimeter accurate beam of radiation to tumor sites.

In addition to these technologies, the practice also employs a 40-slice computed tomography (CT or CAT) scan to facilitate diagnosis and aid linear accelerator treatments. Hematology/Oncology Associates has a full-service laboratory capable of a wide range of tests, including prostate specific antigen, thyroid stimulating hormone, coagulation testing, and cancer antigen markers. Much of the facility’s research into new diagnostic and treatments comes by the way of clinical trials. The practice has taken part in the National Cancer Institute’s Community Clinical Oncology Program since 1986. This partnership allows patients of the center to take part in clinical trials all over the country. Participation in trials by patients is entirely voluntary. Patients who are interested in taking part should speak with their physician or contact the National Cancer Institute.

In addition to treatment, Hematology/Oncology Associates of Central New York offers patient support services. The social work department is staffed by two clinical social workers experienced in cancer patient support services. These social workers can offer general support, information on group support, bereavement counseling, and assist in dealing with financial concerns. Support groups facilitated by the social workers are available to patients and their families and provide comfort to recurrent cancer patients, caregivers, and children. Unique Connections is a nonprofit corporation started in 2006 with the support of Hematology/Oncology Associates staff and previous patients; the program is a mentoring plan designed to provide a “buddy” to recently diagnosed patients. The American Cancer Society also sponsors a number of support services that may be of interest to patients. The Wellness Center at Hematology/Oncology Associates provides exercise services, spa-like treatments, and spiritual support to cancer patients and their families.
