The University of Nebraska Eppley Cancer Center offers patients and their families state-of-the-art care from education on prevention to diagnostics, treatments, surgeries and compassionate aftercare. This center strives to integrate cutting-edge research discoveries into state-of-the-art care for cancer patients. It is the only cancer center in the state of Nebraska that has the designation of cancer center from the National Cancer Institute. Only 25 centers nationwide are honored with this distinction that highlights efforts to achieve scientific excellence and to blend those research results into better quality of life for cancer patients. Leading edge treatments bring new hope to patients and their loved ones who come to the UNMC Eppley Cancer Center.

Eppley Cancer Center is a founder of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network, an organization of 19 top cancer centers in the world. This network sets forth new standards and guidelines for treating cancer patients. These group efforts combine the brain power of top scientists and researchers in the goal of finding breakthrough methods of cancer treatment and care.

All patients work with their medical staff and physicians to develop a specific plan tailored to meet their individual needs. This includes treatments of chemotherapy, radiation, surgery and other facets of their course of treatment for cancer. The Eppley Cancer Center wants to someday see a cancer-free Nebraska.

Work is translated into education for the general public in an attempt to adjust lifestyles to be more conducive to preventing cancer. Free cancer screening and educational events are sponsored by the center; to help accomplish that educational effort, staff and volunteers from the Eppley Cancer Center frequently travel around the state to reach all populations.

Named one of America’s best cancer hospitals in 2008 by U.S. News & World Report, the Nebraska Medical Center also has received the honorable title of Blue Distinction Center for Complex and Rare Cancers by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska. Awards are made by a panel of top clinicians and professional organizations associated with the National Comprehensive Cancer Network.

The UNMC Eppley Cancer Center is widely respected for leading edge research into chemical carcinogenesis, biology at the molecular, cellular and structural levels, and research into new cancer therapies. Ongoing research and participation in clinical trials adds information and educates staff and scientists alike with studies on lymphoma, solid tumors, vaccine development, colon, and breast cancer.

As a National Cancer Institute (NCI) designated cancer center, Eppley Cancer Center receives patients from all over the country and the world for cancer treatment. Even when experience with a specific cancer is limited, this affiliation and the relationships it garners allows patients of even rare cancers like mesothelioma to be treated. Its affiliation with the Nebraska Medical Center hospital and close proximity to the Nebraska Medical Center brings both expertise and special resources to Eppley Cancer Center professionals to incorporate into treatment programs and research projects.

As a Center of Excellence for lymphoma studies, this center now has a database of findings on over 40,000 biopsies. Their stem cell transplantation program for adults and children is one of the world’s busiest programs. Grants for other research include $5.3 million to study pancreatic cancer. A new Center for Breast Cancer Research has become a world-class project on the detection, prevention and treatment of breast cancer. Four main research efforts here involve cancer gene research, molecular biochemical etiology, lymphoma research, and a cancer prevention and control program.
