Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center is an outstanding cancer resource located at the University of California at Irvine. It is the only hospital in Orange County that is designated as a National Cancer Institute Comprehensive Cancer Center. The NCI has extended this designation to only 39 other American institutions. The cancer program has been in place here since 1989, and is affiliated with the UC Irvine School of Medicine. Being based at the university is advantageous to the cancer center in terms of accessing the expertise of an internationally renowned scientific community. Their work in cancer prevention, diagnosis and treatment is an unequaled resource for this region of California.

Originally named the UCI Medical Center, it was renamed to honor the hard work and dedication of the Chao Family. The center brings to the region the latest breakthroughs in cancer treatment, state-of-the-art diagnostic methods, and a full range of outpatient services. The center has attracted some of country’s best qualified medical professionals to Orange County.

As an NCI Comprehensive Cancer Center, the Chao Family CCC uses a multidisciplinary team approach for battling cancer. Researchers, physicians, surgeons, oncologists, radiologists, pathologists, nurses, therapists, dietitians, social workers and pharmacists all work together as a team to focus on cancer issues at all levels.

Over the years, the center has been honored and recognized for their research advancements and treatment innovations. The center was admitted to the Association of American Cancer Institutes in 1990. Their NCI designation as a Cancer Center was awarded in 1994, and upgraded to Comprehensive in 1997. The NCI sponsors a Cancer Genetics Network to look at the interactions between cancer and genes. They have invited only eight institutions in the country to join this research network; CFCCC is honored to be one of those top institutions. Their role is to compile all information about cancer cases that are diagnosed or treated in the local Orange, San Diego and Imperial counties.

An important area of clinical research at the Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center is cancer prevention. Clinical trials are run here to study prevention and treatment of cancer of the colon, liver, mouth, pancreas and prostate. The center was one of six cancer institutes selected by the National Cancer Institute to be a lead site of a chemoprevention consortium. The goal of this network activity is to develop safe and effective cancer prevention drugs through joint research.

Being in close proximity to the university and being affiliated with the university medical school allows this center to host extensive programs for cancer research. The teaching hospital is the site of many ongoing clinical trials conducted at the Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center.

The CFCCC is affiliated with the School of Medicine at the University of California, Irvine, and as is the case with all of the nation's Comprehensive Cancer centers, this university-based approach to the delivery of critical cancer services benefits from an affiliation with a teaching hospital and research facility. These wide ranging clinical trials study medicines and therapies for local cancer patients to determine which are the safest and most effective.

This cancer center offers comprehensive treatment and care of all cancer forms, including mesothelioma. It is fully staffed with oncology professionals, faculty members, health care givers and community outreach personnel.
