The Cancer Therapy and Research Center (CTRC) is in San Antonio, Texas and is part of the University of Texas Science Center. It was started in 1974 to provide outpatient radiation therapy to cancer patients and has since grown to be one of the best and most complete cancer centers in the United States. Today they are the only designated National Cancer Institute (NCI) cancer center in the region. This means that their work is dedicated to the treatment and research of specific cancers. To earn the NCI designation, a cancer facility must maintain the highest levels possible of quality cancer research and care.
The Cancer Therapy and Research Centers combines the most up-to-date care available, groundbreaking research, and a wide range of cancer prevention, awareness, and education techniques to help people in South Texas and from across the country fight cancer.
In 1991, CTRC opened the Institute for Drug Development (IDD). The goal of the IDD is to conduct research programs to develop new and innovative cancer treatments. The IDD also works with pharmaceutical companies from across the globe as well as biotechnology companies to develop the best new cancer drugs that they can.
In order to facilitate the testing of any new drugs developed, the IDD has fostered the largest Phase I clinical studies program in the world. A Phase I clinical study is one in which a new drug is tested on patients for the first time. This is the first step towards FDA approval. More that 350 patients each year come to CTRC from around the world to receive new treatments by taking part in their clinical studies.
Two of CTRC's other science and research programs are:
CTRC leads the way in ways to prevent, diagnose, treat, and research cancer. Here are just some of the ways in which they achieve this.
Since they originally opened as a radiation treatment center, they are considered to be leaders in that field. They strive to be the first in their region to use the newest tools for radiation treatment that are available.
Included in their drug research is the development of a cancer drug that would not be toxic to healthy cells as are chemotherapy drugs.
Another member of the CTRC is the Barshop Institute for Longevity and Aging studies. Their goal is to find new techniques to prolong a cancer patient's life and to stop the development of their cancer.
The Cancer Therapy and Research Center studies and treats just about every form of cancer, including lung cancer and asbestos-related cancers like mesothelioma for which the only known cause is exposure to asbestos. When a patient goes to CTRC for treatment of their cancer, no matter what the form, they can be sure that they will be receiving the newest and best treatments available.
