The Cancer Center of Kansas in Wichita was founded in 1975. The center provides research in the areas of gene targeting, flow cytometry, biotechnology, and electron microscopy. Each field contributes in aiding the advancement of cancer research. An integrative approach to treating cancer is employed to address the patient’s entire well being. The approach involves nutrition, meditation, and other holistic therapies to treat the mind, body, and spirit.

Currently, there are 13 sites located throughout the Kansas area to assist patients afflicted with cancer. These locations include:

At the Kansas Cancer Center, the patient may receive surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, gene therapy, or a combination of treatments. Patients are treated with leading edge technology to help oncologists identify the cancer tumor and make an accurate diagnosis. Clinical trials also provide patients access to leading edge therapy that may improve the prognosis of a patient and reduce side effects.

When new drugs are developed, oncologists must determine how the drug interacts with other drugs and the body chemistry of the patient. Clinical trials may address concerns such as early cancer detection, prevention, patient management and recovery. Participation in clinical trials is completely voluntary. Principal investigators require the patient meet eligibility requirements and a written consent acknowledging risks. Some private insurance companies will not cover the costs of routine care while participating in a trial. Patients should inquire with their primary oncologist beforehand to verify coverage.

The Kansas Cancer Center formed a partnership with the following organizations and clinics to provide patients access to clinical trials:

  • National Cancer Institute
  • MD Anderson Cancer Center
  • Southwest Oncology Group
  • North Central Cancer Center Group (Mayo Clinic)
  • University of Rochester Cancer Center (New York)
  • National Surgical Breast and Bowel Project

The University of Kansas Cancer Center partners with the Center for Outcomes Research and Education (CORE) to provide advancements in cancer therapies. The CORE research staff shares its discoveries with other clinicians and the University of Kansas’s School of Medicine to promote accelerated cancer drug development. Scientific abstracts, presentations, and manuscripts are produced to facilitate this process.

The University of Kansas General Clinical Research Center partners with the University of Kansas Cancer Center to facilitate further cancer research and patient support. The center is funded by several governmental agencies as well as private sources. The University of Kansas Cancer Center has been diligently pursuing its designation from the National Cancer Institute. Recently, the Cancer Center received a $1 million award from a Kansas City architecture and engineering firm. The center has a goal to raise $92 million before it receives its designation in September 2011. Currently, the University of Kansas Cancer Center’s has raised $38 million.

Gene Therapy is one of the latest experimental cancer therapy techniques employed to destroy cancer cells. The Gene-Targeting facility is conducting state-of-the-art research on genetic replacement, repair, and destruction. Each of these techniques assists the scientists in destroying cancer cells. Advanced technology, such as Narishige manipulators, blastocyst injections, BioRad GenePulser II electoportator and Nomarski optics are used to facilitate cancer research.

Patients suffering from rare cancers, such as mesothelioma, may benefit from the research that scientists conduct at this center.
