Baptist Centers for Cancer Care (BCCC) in Tennessee are a part of Baptist Memorial Health Care Corporation, a 15 hospital network that serves patients in the mid southern United States. This system of affiliated physicians, hospice services, home and psychiatric care, medical and surgical clinics, outpatient and rehabilitation centers is spread across multiple cities in Tennessee and Mississippi. BCCC has been a regional innovator in cancer care since its inception. Notable firsts for BCCC include a mylosupression unit, full field digital mammography, mobile mammography, and autologous stem cell transplantation.

BCCC provides treatment for all types of cancer, including mesothelioma, a thoracic cavity cancer that can arise from asbestos exposure. BCCC hospitals in Tennessee include Baptist Women’s Hospital (BWH), Memphis, Baptist Memorial Hospital (BMH), Memphis, and BMH, Union City. BCCC offers a number of medical and support services that may be of interest to patients and families with mesothelioma or other cancers.

Inpatient Cancer Units

Medical, surgical, and myelosupression oncology units are located in Memphis. Oncology nurses administer chemotherapy, and are skilled in educating patients about nutrition, skin and mouth care, symptoms and signs of infection, and other topics related to chemotherapy and cancer. The nurses on the surgical oncology unit provide the same services and post operative care. The surgical unit also has a dedicated treatment room for special procedures. The myelosupression unit is available for patients who are undergoing high dose chemotherapy or stem cell transplants and need to be protected from infection. In addition to physicians and oncology nurses, the multidisciplinary team on these units include chaplains, social workers, case managers and dietitians.

Radiation Oncology

Radiation treatment for cancer is available on the BMH campus in Memphis, and at the Cancer Care Center in Union City. The Radiation Oncology Center in Memphis is a radiation therapy center that utilizes advanced techniques in radiosurgery and radiotherapy. Positron emission tomography (PET) scanning is also available to help diagnose certain cancers. Additional services include nutritional teaching, social services, education, and area support groups. In 2007, the Memphis campus began using a new form of treatment known as image guided radiation therapy. Variant Medical Systems provides the Trilogy accelerators used for this therapy.

The Cancer Care Center in Union City provides radiation oncology services in conjunction with Radiation Oncology Associates headquartered in Jackson Tennessee. Doctors there are able to treat patients with intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), a process which uses a linear accelerator to increase radiation to cancers while limiting radiation exposure to surrounding normal tissue.

Clinical Trials

Cancer research is what makes safe and effective treatment possible. BCCC participates in clinical trials through BMH’s Baptist Clinical Research Center. Clinical trials are research projects that use actual patients to test new ways to diagnose, prevent, or treat disease, or improve the quality of life in patients with a particular condition. Clinical trials can also be a way for patients to obtain cutting edge therapy for cancers, like mesothelioma, that may be aggressive and hard to treat. A clinical trial is one of the last steps in the research process; it is started only after a medication, prevention strategy, or screening technique has been thoroughly evaluated. However, patients are very carefully selected, and must be made fully aware of the benefits and risks of being in the study.

BCCC and the Baptist Memorial Health Care System’s major goal is to provide high quality patient focused cancer care that is based on teamwork, is close to home, and embodies the three fold ministry of Christ - healing, teaching and preaching.
